Baptism gifts

We are going back to my hometown to have DS baptised (which is about 900 miles away). Many of my friends and family haven't met DS and I am sure we will be getting gifts for him. After the baptism we will be going to have a lunch reception. I don't really want to open all the gifts there. Do you think it is expected that I open the gifts or can we just do it privately? There will be about 50 people there.

Re: Baptism gifts

  • I wouldn't expect gifts to be opened at a baptism.  Most gifts at a baptism are usually $$ (at least in my experience) and that could be very awkward to sit and open cards with different amounts coming out.

  • We didn't do the gift opening in front of anyone...  We did it when we were home and had a chance to relax and open things up at our own pace.

  • I guess I'm in the minority here. When DS was baptized in November, we had a very small luncheon afterwards, with 6 other people besides us in attendance. They had all given us gifts, not actual money. We felt we had to open them there, that there was an expectation of it. Wasn't awkward at all. But I can see how it would be if the party was larger.

  • I wouldn't expect gifts to be opened. I hate that part of parties and showers, so I even hope it doesn't happen there! :)
  • Glad to hear that the majority of you wouldn't want to watch someone open gifts. I will not be doing it.

Mostly they were cards with money.
