Question from a worry wart PGALer

Hi ladies,

I'm 24.3 weeks pregnant and at my OB check up today, I was told my belly is measuring 4.5 weeks ahead. Doc didn't seem too worried, said it could be the way the baby is lying, but it could be too much fluid, diabetes or the baby could just be really big.

I'm going for my 3 hour diabetes test in 2 weeks along with an ultrasound so hoping that everything looks normal or I get some answers. I'm also going to be stricter with my diet going forward as I've gained 25 pounds so far and perhaps this is the reason my belly is measuring big.

I'm wondering if any of you ladies measured big in your pregnancy and what was the reason for it? Did everything turn out ok?

Hi there!

I started gaining weight rapidly after my morning sickness went away around six months. I started swelling quite badly from edema and was watched closely but my GD test was negative and the swelling was mainly in my feet, ankles, arms and stomach.

All in all I gained 25 lbs by seven months and another 25 lbs from the edema from seven months on.

I gave birth with no complications at 41w to a 7lbs14oz. Boy. I then lost that 25lbs. of edema around 10 PP. And only have about 15 lbs more to go :

I'm sure there's some who's warning signs echoed what you are experiencing. But for me they turned out to be nothing hope yours doesn't turn out to be anything either!

I just wanted to say that those measurements can be off by a lot. Even when you the ultrasound, those can also be misleading. Plenty of women have been told they ate measuring big or will have a big baby and they don't. I was always measuring on track but ended up having a huge baby so you don't know.

As long as your doctor is checking you for other issues, I'd say your in good hands! Hang in there and good luck!

Obviously I'm different because I carried twins, but my measurement was always off by a minimum of two weeks when I would go to the OB in the am and MFM in the afternoon. One would say I measured 22w and the other 24 or 26 or even 28. It's entirely subjective to the person measuring, time of day, baby placement, what you've eaten, when you've last pooped, etc.

I measured ahead, by ultrasound, almost the whole pregnancy. By the end, I was about 3w ahead. I did end up positive for GD. In total, I gained about 35lbs.. and, 10lbs of that occured in the last 10 days or so -- mostly all swelling. I was induced for Pre-E.

I want to second (or, 3rd, or 4th?) what PPs have said about ultrasounds having the potential to be very misleading. They kept telling me my son was going to be "huge". The doctors didn't even want me to try a natural birth. Granted, I delivered 2 weeks early, but DS was only 7lbs 9oz. By no means as "huge" as they were thinking. He did (and still does!!) have a really big head, though, which skewed things quite a bit.

I wouldn't panic.. see how your 3hr test comes back, and go from there It sounds like your doc is aware, and that they are going to look into it more! Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!!

I measured big from about 18w on. L measured up to 6w ahead throughout the pg. He was born by c-section at 9lb 3oz and the reason I had the c-section is b/c he was real comfy and not dropping into position. So I wouldn't worry too much, just listen to you dr.

I agree with all of this. Those estimates are just that: estimates and they can be totally off. I was always measuring "ahead" (did not have GD or any other issues) and my little guy was a perfect 7lbs 15 oz.

I measured ahead pretty much the whole pregnancy (including by ultrasound). One week I was I think 3+ weeks ahead by belly measurement. I gave birth to a 7 lb 1 oz healthy baby boy at 37.5 weeks. I was told belly measurements can be very unreliable. Also depends on who's doing the measuring, etc. GL, I'm sure you'll be just fine!!

I agree that the measurements can be off by a lot. The baby's growth level can also change. DS was always on the huge side until around 30w and then he leveled off. He was born under 7 pounds at 39w, 2d. I was worried that he'd be a 10 pounder since he was already almost a pound at 18w, but his growth slowed in the third tri.

I started measuring 3-4 weeks ahead with my DS by around 20 weeks. I passed my GD test, he was just a Big baby. He came early at 36wks and was 8lb. Hopefully you just have a big baby in there

I measured ahead with both DD and DS. DD was 8lbs 4oz and DS was 8lbs 8oz. I only gained about 30 lbs with DS so it was just that he was a bigger baby. You said you're going in for your 3 hr GTT. Which I would assume means you failed the 1 hr? That could explain why you're measuring ahead. But it sounds like your dr is monitoring you well. I wouldn't worry too much. GL!

No I haven't done the one hour. Im in Canada so things are a bit different and I think, as I understand it that you just get one test and its the three hour one.
