Babies: 3 - 6 Months

5 month old sleeping habits

I have a 5 month old who is quite large (20lbs at his last appt 3 wks ago where he was treated for RSV, bronchiolitis and an ear infection) and his 6 month appt isn't for another 3 wks.

I have been reading and hearing from others that he should be sleeping through the night, he has a hard time staying up much past 6:30 without getting overly tired....we feed him about 2-3oz of rice cereal around 5:30, give him a bath, read stories, and feed him the rest of his bottle (around 7oz) and put him into his crib awake.  He talks to himself for a little bit and then falls asleep.  He wakes up around 3:30 every night to eat.....then goes right back to sleep until around 7am....is this a normal sleep pattern or should he not be waking up at 3:30 and if no what should we be doing to stop that??

Re: 5 month old sleeping habits

  • does he nap?  you can dream feed him when you go to bed.  my guy gets sleepy around 7ish but then gets a 2nd wind and goes to bed betw/ 8-9.  and if he is hungry he may really be hungry.  some sttn at 5 mos not all.  some need a middle of night feeding for a few more mos.if my guy gets his last bottle at 8 or before then he will wake up hungry at night.  830 and after and he is fine,  so i dream feed if his last bottle was before 8. you can cluster feed in the pm and also give less and less oz 4 his middle of night meal to wean him.   maybe he is ready for purees too

  • how much is he eating during the day? if he is eating enough oz during the day I would think he wouldn't need a MOTN feeding but all babies are different. If he eats and goes back to sleep for another 4 hrs, that's great!!! Have you tried offering a pacifier instead? Or just snuggling/rocking him? It's up to you what you want to do, there is no set rule but most Peds would say based on his age/weight he should be able to go 12 hrs without eating.

My guy is the same age and weight. He is still waking once a night.

  • Every baby is different and different babies start sleeping through the night at different times. My 5 month old has only slept through the night 2-3 times (he's breastfed and bottle fed breastmilk).  He goes to sleep between 8-9pm, wakes between 2-3am and then sleeps again until anywhere between 5-7am.
  • Thank you for all your help!!

  • We're in the same boat.  DS isn't quite as big as your little guy.  He still wakes to eat once, usually around 4am.  He just started showing interest in baby food so hopefully once he starts eating more food he'll drop that MOTN feeding.  For now, I figure if he's finishing a bottle in the MOTN then he's hungry.

  • I nurse DS and he was waking up for nursings twice a night, but only for a few minutes.  I was going to drop one of the nursings, but he dropped both for me.  He wasn't really using them to actually feed, just more comfort sucking so he could fall back asleep.  If your DS is actually eating, then he still needs the MOTN feeding.  If he feeds for only a few minutes and still has half his bottle/only nurses a few minutes, then I say it's out of habit.  GL!

  • Sounds normal to me. Especially if he is actually eating at 330 and not just needing you to get back to sleep.

  • We were in your exact same boat until about 2 weeks ago. All of a sudden he dropped that feeding and slept right through. I think it's just a timing thing :)
