BLW question

DS will be 6 months next week, and I'd like to start solids soon.  I thought about trying avocado as his first food, and I'd like to try the BLW method.  Here's my question (sorry if this is a stupid one) - should I cut up the avocado into small pieces that won't pose a choking hazard.  Or should I cut large pieces that he can use as a "handle"?  TIA

Re: BLW question

  • Large strips. A 6 month old doesn't have a pincer grip and can not pick up small pieces.

You should probably read the book - or at least the pamphlet - if you're planning to do BLW.

  • Large pieces that he can pick up and nom on his own.

DD sometimes had a hard time with avocado when she was little, it'd get a little too slippery for her. When that was the case I'd cover it in some crushed cereal to give it some grip.

  • Oh, and if you want dinner and a show, just give him half an avocado in the shell. It's hilarious and awesome.
  • Avocado was hard for DD1 at first because it was so slippery but it does keep them entertained.

  • Oh. I had totally planned to do blw this time around but dd actually prefers being spoon fed so I just mash up soft cooked foods for her and she "helps" feed herself with the spoon.

    Agreed.

And I don't get the slippery avocado thing - didn't y'all leave the peel on?  That's what's recommended to do.  They learn to scrape it off eventually, but before then they just mouth.

DD had zero desire to mouth it with the skin on. She just couldn't deal with the texture of the skin.

Plain avocado? She'd eat the whole thing.
