What should I grow this year?

If I get my space at the community garden I will be able to grow so many things.  But what do you ladies think I should grow?

This is what I did last year in containers on my deck.  And you'll see the things that failed.

Basil
Parsley
Rosemary
Fennel-failed
Arugula
Cucumbers
Zucchini-failed
Green Beans
Jalepenos
Radishes-failed
Green Onions
Sweet Peppers

Re: What should I grow this year?

  • We did pickling cucumbers and jalapeos last year, but with 60 days of 100 degree weather, the jalapeos didn't fair well. I'm definitely doing the cukes again this year, but that'll be it.

I'd do basil and rosemary, for sure. And cucumbers. Can you do anaheim peppers? LOVE those, and then you can make your own chili rellenos. Yummm...

Onions and green beans are also always good. What do you guys eat the most of?

I definitely want to do a larger pepper with less spice.  I might try the anaheim.

And we eat it all!  Basically everything on that list is stuff we eat.  I might try to branch out this year and do some more stuff.

  • Yellow green peppers!

We had a super hot summer and my jalepenos were off the hook.  And they were the spiciest peppers ever.

Ours would flower, but not produce the actual peppers.

  • I need to work on a list too but I'm afraid that until we put in a fence the deer will eat everything.

    What about:

    Carrots

    Tomatoes

    Peas

A baby and add dill to your list, it's so yummy.

Oh dill.  Yeah. That's a good one.

And btw, Mollusk is adorbs in that pic.

  • This is a picture of the community garden I would be part of!  I get one of those boxes.  I'm so excited!

  • Cilantro?  Don't remember if you liked it or not.

    NO!

    I hate Cilantro.

Plus Cilantro is a pain to grow because it grows and then you cut it back and then you just have to replant.  It doesn't just regrow.

  • I can't recall what grew at what time of year, but we had:

    Basil

    Cilantro

    Chives

    Cabbages

    Lettuce (several varieties)

    Broccoli

    Tomatoes

    Snap peas

    Peppers

    Radishes

    Okra

    Collards

    This year we're adding kale.

We had the most luck with our herbs, tomatoes, snap peas, and lettuce.

Do you have enough room to do a row of carrots? Garden carrots are so much better than store bought carrots.

Though looking at you list & seeing that radishes failed, it might not be the best idea.

But I get the plot at the community garden, I should be good to go with some root vegetables.  I will definitely try carrots!

I definitely want to have more greens this year.  We love greens in this household.

  • If I get around to starting my garden this year I plan to attempt to grow:

    Cucumbers

    Kale

    Snap peas

    Tomatoes

    Assorted peppers

  • Potatoes! We did Yukon Gold and red skin last year. They are ridiculously easy. Seriously: plant 'em on St Patty's Day and dig 'em up when the plant looks like it's dying.
