March 2013 Moms

c-section moms

Hi ladies. After a long discussion with my OB yesterday, I think I will end up scheduling a c-section. I have some health issues going on, and it looks like it may be the safest option for baby and me.

I had a vaginal delivery with DS#1, pretty standard delivery and recovery.

I'm wondering, should I add anything special to my hospital bag for the c-section? I had planned on wearing nursing tanks and yoga pants once I showered and stuff. I know I will probably be staying an extra day now, so I'll add extra underwear, socks and stuff. Anything else?

Re: c-section moms

  • Honestly I wore my hospital gown the whole time. You won't want anything near that incision! The only pants I've found comfy are these super soft loose pj pants from walmart

  • I have a c-section planned for March 22. My plan is to bring yoga pants (in a size a little bigger so they are not snug, but don't fall off - they fit ok right now so I imagine they will fit the same after delivery), a nursing top, a soft, short robe, couple pairs of underwear (unless I can get away with wearing what the hospital gives me), and socks with rubber grippers. I plan to wear the hospital gown the majority of the time, and only brought one outfit to go home in.

I am a FTM, but I know that for the first day, I will have a catheter in, and I will be very sore, so I don't anticipate putting on any regular clothes, aside from the robe and socks. Second day may be similar, and third day is going home (hopefully!)

     Good luck!!

  • Thanks ladies. I have a nursing nightgown that came with a robe. Maybe I will bring that instead of the yoga pants and tanks. That way it will be off my incision and if I want to wear something other than the gown I can. Then just a going home outfit. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • I had a c section Monday. Tuesday I showered and put yoga pants that are fold overs on, but wore them high like maternity pants. At night I slept in a hospital gown so I wouldn't be bothered by the pants and its also probably a good idea to the the incision breath. Since then I've been in the yoga pants and tanks. I wore the mesh panties they give you, they feel like there's nothing touching your incision. Today is the first day I put regulars underwear on and they are not bothering me at all. They come up about an inch or two higher than the incision.

  • I would bring some sort or gown or a robe. I wore nursing tops and a robe. I couldn't wear pants till the last day and even then it was very very loose pj pants. My yoga pants hurt.

I vote for pants that sit at your waist and not lower.  I think I generally wore scrub pants instead of yoga pants for a while to avoid my incision.  Also, you'll want to have some granny panties, if not to wear at the hospital, then at least at home for a while.  It was a number of weeks before I could wear regular bikini underwear without them irritating my incision.  I had a reaction (blisters) to the adhesive/tape for the dressing so I found the mesh panties to not be comfortable but they are definitely worth a shot.

You may also want to pack a heating pad.  I had some gas pain that radiated to my shoulder after surgery and a heating pad helped.

Something else that you may want to make sure to discuss with your doctor is how they handle pain control after the section.  I was surprised that my hospital left in the spinal/epidural for 24 hours post surgery which meant I was pretty much confined to the bed (with a catheter) for the first day.  At the new hospital I'm delivering at, they require a second person during that time to be there if you want to keep the baby in the room with you which could potentially alter your post-partum plans some (e.g., I plan on sending DH home to be with DDs).

  • I think I wore "real" underwear home and used their huge mesh ones while there. I wore yoga pants, a t-shirt and a bathrobe after the first or second day.

And I was checked in on a Thursday and didn't go home until Tuesday.

This... I had my c-section on Friday and did the exact same thing minus the hospital gown at night (I slept in a tank) I also asked for some extra mesh panties take home since the one I bought were not big enough. Good Luck!!

  • I found putting on underwear difficult, I definitely did not want to put on pants.

I wore a nursing tank and a robe while in the hospital.

  • There's a lot of checking & probing under the hood. I'm not even sure the nurses would have allowed pants for the first few days because of the inconvenience. I brought nursing nightgowns with robes. Don't bother with underwear...the mesh are great.
