Mistaken gender

So I know it happens but it is starting to annoy me.  When I am at stores or church people say she is beautiful.  Well my LO is a boy, I don't dress him in purple or pink, he does where red, neutrals, and of course boy colors.  Any one else have this happen?  Everyone I know is surprised and think he looks like a boy and of course they are family and friends so they could just be saying it but I think some of them would be honest.  He has big blue eyes and long eyelashes so that is why I am thinking others see him as a girl.  Just need to vent!

Re: Mistaken gender

  • I think that we as parents give strangers too much credit when really they are just completely unobservant. I could dress DD in head to toe pink and bows and people would still tell me what a cute little boy I have. At least their hearts are in the right place.

my sons name is Kyler, and when I tell people, they think I say Tyler... whatever, I don't correct them because they wont ever see him again...

  • I think a lot of times pretty boy babies get confused as girls because they are so pretty! I just take it as a compliment!

  • When LO's hair is calm, he looks like a little girl that badly needs a haircut. I often get he/she is so pretty, and they immediately regret their words. I don't care if you call him a he, a she or an it, as long as it's followed by a compliment. If they say, "Oh, she's so stinky," or "Oh, what's wrong with him?" then I'll get annoyed.

  • Thanks everyone!  I do enjoy the compliment of him being cute and usually I don't say anything but when the lady yesterday asked if he had his Easter dress yet I had to say something lol!

  • Sometimes it has nothing to do with your LO and everything to do with that person. If they have a niece or granddaughter then that's what they relate to. DS is blond with blue eyes but my family is dark so every time they see him its "OH look at how dark his hair is getting!" Even though it hasn't changed since birth and when DHS family which is Dutch sees him its "OH look at how light his hair is getting!"

It's not your LO its the person looking at him. He will be very handsome I'm sure.
  • Big thick lashes I think cause some of this . .. Our little man gets this all the time but its totally our fault as he wears a hot pink snowsuit. My DH is out with him all the time and tells me everyday how many people tell him how beautiful and well behaved his daughter is. Its even more hilarious since he takes him to guy places contastly - hardware store, scrap yard, yard waste facility, boxing matches etc. It used to annoy me that he NEVER corrects anyone but since we are too cheap to buy him a boy snowsuit we have only ourselves to blame. Sadly we have the same suit for next winter in a bigger size, a similarly high end suit would be spendy and we live where it is bitter cold. I was thinking of sewing a giant patch on it "Real Men Wear Pink"

Yesterday DD was dressed in a light blue shirt with lace around the neckline and ruffle sleeves, white leggings with lace trim, and pink shoes. THREE separate people referred to her as "him." I don't take it personally or find it that annoying, but it is amazing how unobservant some people are.... As soon as they see blue, they just think "boy."

  • It hasn't happened much with DS, but when DD was a baby she got called a boy all the time. She didn't have much hair, which didn't help the situation, but I still dressed her in girl clothes. I think people just see what they see and don't put much thought into it. I've noticed that the older generation does this especially. I just let it go. Not worth worrying about :)

  • When she was younger, yes people thought DD was a boy all the time.  I always have her dressed very girly.  Even if I had a bow in her hair people would still say ,"Oh, he's beautiful."  I finally figured out that it usually happened when she was in her carseat or stroller.  Our carseat is gender neutral and the colors are sort of "boyish"  I realized that people never really looked at her and just saw the carseat and assumed boy.  Now that I usually am wearing her or carrying her in the stores, people know she's a girl.

I understand your frustration.  People are idiots.  It doesn't bother me when people ask "Is it a girl or a boy?"  It bothers me when people assume and they are wrong.

I also wanted to add that my DD has always, since birth, had super long hair and long eyelashes.  I think she looks pretty girly even if she's just wearing a diaper but up until she was like 6 or 7 months old people thought she was a boy.
