STMs, perineal tear Q

Any STMs who had to deal with a perineal tear?  Do you remember what degree laceration it was labeled as, and how long it took to heal?

Today was the first day that my stitches aren't really bothering me, but I'm still bleeding. I had my baby 7 days ago.

And I do plan on calling my OB tomorrow morning.

  • 3rd degree and it took more than 6 weeks to heal and I can still feel the scar tore to the side but everyone is different. I also had bleeding for almost 6 weeks. I think if it had not been for that I would have been back running the week after giving birth.

  • I have been taking a daily bath with table salts mixed in.  Helps quite a bit

  • Mine was a superficial tear. Not even considered a stage one. It took about 3 weeks to heal. The bleeding is normal for up to 6 weeks.

  • 3rd degree with DS1. Didn't really bother me much after the first week, except the stitches felt tight and scratchy at one point. I bled for 4 weeks with him. I had skid marks with DD that bothered me for a few days, and same with this LO. I bled with DD the full 6 weeks. Still bleeding at 10 days here.

  • 2nd degree and it took a good 5 or 6 weeks to heal, but it hurt for much longer.

  • I had an "almost" 4th degree tear and honestly, it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated considering the degree. I think the OB did an amazing job stitching me up or something. Anyway, I still bled for maybe 2 weeks, but that's totally normal, tear or no tear. I think I actually bled for less time than most people. I'm  not sure how long it took to heal overall but physically, I felt fine in about a week.
  • I'm a FTM who just delivered on Tuesday. I had a 2nd degree tear and I'm in tears almost every time I urinate or get up/sit down. Hope the worst of it is over soon :/

  • I had a 4th degree tear with DS1, took me about a week to heal but following the instructions of the doctors and nurses I was walking around on day 3. I don't have anyone to really 'baby" me so I get over things quickly though and ignore if there is any pain lol I only bled for 2 wks and never had a problem with pain or my stitches, I also only took tylenol or motrin. With DS2 I had a 3rd degree tear and didn't have time to be in any pain, he was in the special care unit and I had a toddler at home so I was running back and forth between hospital and home so that took a lot of it off my mind. Sleeping on the hospital couch was a little painful at night though lol

I had a 2nd degree tear and around day 5 is when it started to get better, I'm almost two weeks out and it's much much better, I am still bleeding though.

  • I'm sure that you're healing appropriately, but just keep an eye on things.  If you don't feel like you're getting better, please push it with your OB.  I had a 2nd degree tear.  I went back at 3 weeks in a lot of pain - they told me everything was fine.  By 6 weeks, my stitches still hadn't dissolved, and I could still feel pulling and pain when walking or working out.  They told me once again that everything was fine.

At 9 weeks with no change, they figured out that I'd healed incorrectly.  I went to a new practice, got a third opinion after that.  I ended up needed some slight corrective surgery, perineal steroid shots, and additional treatment after that.  It took almost 2 years to start to feel normal again.

I know that I'm the exception, but I just want to encourage you to vocalize your issues.  If you think something isn't right, pursue it.
