Baby gagging

DS keeps gagging himself with his hands. He sucks on them a lot, but doesn't puke until 10 minutes later. We have just started rice cereal in his bottle, so I'm thinking that that might be the problem too?

How much rice cereal do you put in your babies' bottles? How do you keep your LO from gagging themselves? He's not spitting up; it's nasty puke.

TIA

It's actually discouraged to put cereal in the bottles specifically for the choking hazard.  If your baby needs rice cereal, please consider thinning it out and spoon feeding.

As far as gagging on hands, I think that part is relatively normalish.  (At least I hope so since DD does it all the time! LOL)  It's a learning experience.  They don't know to only stick their hands in so far, ya know?

  • We put 1/2 tsp of rice cereal for every 2 oz of formula.  It's really not a choking hazard as everyone seems to think--Yeah, it would be if you made it thick like true cereal, but it doesn't even make the formula noticeably thicker.  if you follow your pedi's instructions you'll be fine.

Gagging on his hands seems normal to me.  I wouldn't worry unless he is seriously hurting himself.

  • it took dd a couple weeks to stop gagging herself with her hands. she did it ALL the time at night and in the carseat. it was to the point she was spitting up from it, made me so nervous in her crib. she's much better now and chews her hands but no more gagging.
