Babies: 9 - 12 Months

xp: sleep training/CIO...WWYD??

I have posted here before asking for advice....yet I still need some more!!

Here's the background: LO is currently 8 months old. LO has always been a crappy sleeper. At 6 months she was waking 4-5x a night and i would always nurse her back to sleep. We tried the sleepeasy solution and got down to 2 night wakings (she has never had an issue with putting herself to sleep at the beginning of the night or with naps).

Last Friday I started Ferber to try to wean down to 1 night feeding after 3am.  However, 6 days in, she still wakes around 1ish and cries on and off for about 1.5 hours.  It is more of a fussy cry, not a cry CRY (does that make sense), and she never goes longer than 10 minutes, so we never go and check on her. But, she will then fall asleep for a couple minutes, then will cry for 5, then sleep for 2,etc, etc.  Then evenutally will fall asleep and wake around 330-4 when i feed her.

I find it hard to believe that she is actually hungry when she wakes for her first round....shouldn't an 8 month old be able to sleep 6-8 hours without a feeding? (She feeds at 7, then asleep by 715).

I have no idea what to do at this point.  it's been 6 nights since we started and i feel like we aren't making progress. I am also personally at my wit's end. I need to sleep, i've been sick since december and I just can't take it anymore.

Advice please!!

  • Questions for you...
How much does she eat during the day and how much milk does she get? Once my son was eating solids and getting a good amount of mill during the day he would sleep all night. Randomly sometimes get up at night and I would send dh in to put a paci in. If I was the one to go in he would not go back to sleep or calm down. I bf but would give a bottle before bed so I could really top him off with extra milk so I knew he wasn't hungry an getting up out of habit. She could be hungry if she's not getting enough during the day

  • I would try to feed her at her earlier wake up and then see if she'll sleep through the 3-3:30 wake up.

My little guy is  a terrible sleeper and we're trying to eliminate a couple of he's night feedings too. So far it has seemed to work best to feed him at midnight-1 when he wakes up. So this is his night

7pm bed time (fed right before bed)

8:30-10 wake up but right back to sleep w/in a few minutes

    12-2 wake up and eat

sometimes he wakes up for a few minutes around 4

    6-7 up for the day.

  • It sounds to me like she might actually be hungry at 1:00.  My DS1 was like this and just could not drop that 1:00 feeding until he was about 15 months and fully weened.  My best advice for getting through this - go to bed as soon as she is down for the night so that you can get a good solid chunk of sleep before the 1:00 am wake up and hopefully you will feel more well rested and will be better able to handle it.
  • A baby needs a set number of calories a day. If she is used to getting say, a third of those calories at NIGHT then yes, of course she may be hungry. The trick is to feed her as much as humanly possible in the daytime then night wean.
