Positive GBS

I got the news on Tuesday that am positive for GBS. My doctor doesn't seem concerned at all and said it's very common. They would start me on penicilin (SP?) when I go into labor and take me off of it as soon as my LO is born. I'm scared to even look it up and read about it. Do any of you have experience with having this?

Re: Positive GBS

  • I had it with my Daughter and again this time too.  I think your Dr. is correct and you shouldn't worry.  Lots of women have it.

Thank you all. I feel better knowing that it's more common then I thought.

Super common.  I will be put on anti-b's during labour as well

  • I was negative with DS1, positive with DD, and negative this time with DS2. Everything was fine with DD, we just induced to make sure we had enough time to get the two doses of abx in I was five centimeters dilated at 39 weeks with a history of fast labors, so she gave me a dose, waited 2 hours, and broke my water... I delivered 3 hours later, just after getting the second dose. DD was perfectly healthy. I took a prenatal with probiotics this time around, but am not sure how much that had to do with being negative for GBS this time. But, it can't hurt for you to take probiotics from now until labor. Good luck!

  • I am a FTM, but popped positive for this too.  25% of all women have this naturally occurring bacteria so your hospital staff will be very familiar with what to do.  Even if you or the baby do not receive treatment it is 1:200 chance the child will show GBS symptoms.  That number jumps to 1:4000 with the penicillin given during labor.

  • PPs and your doctor are correct. It's nothing major like an STD, just an infection that could possibly be passed on to your child during a vaginal delivery. I think my doctor told me as many as 40% of women test positive. They just want to see if you test positive so they can administer meds before you begin pushing. There are *extremely* rare cases in which it can still be passed on to your LO, but even then it's treatable as I'm sure I've read that they run quick tests for it as soon as they're born.

  • I've heard that 40% of pregnant women get it. It's no big deal - they just give you antibiotics during labor so it doesn't get passed on to your LO.

  • I am too and it usually isn't a big deal. However it can have an effect on how your delivery goes.
With DS my water broke first. When I got to the hospital they started the antibiotics as usual, only they were concerned about making labour as short as possible since when your water breaks the baby is exposed to the bacteria until it is born. They wanted to augment me and I didn't know any better so I let them. I think this was a big mistake. My OB who wasn't able to be there for my delivery has said that she feels the too early intervention was a factor in my failure to progress and eventual c section. She says generally intervention begets intervention.
Do look up GBS, it's not a scary thing and it will help you to make informed decisions. Good luck!
  • I was also told today that I'm positive for GBS and I'm not concerned. The nurse who delivered the news told me that they'll get me on antibiotics as soon as I get to the hospital. It's common.
