This wasn't discussed but what do you think of smoking pot and then caring for your kids?
This excludes smoking with them in the same room or area. Just being high on weed and watching your kids.
Are you more, less, or equally impaired when consuming a few glasses of wine aka slight buzz as compared to a couple hits of a joint...?
I vote equal. Both will cloud the thought process and slow your reaction time.
What does parenting think of this?

Re: S/O moms who drink wine...
Agree with this completely. I do not think weed is bad or that it impairs you more than alcohol.
I do think because it is illegal in my state it should not be used when you have children.
that's actually what I was thinking when I asked, "what kind of drugs?" in your other post...
Meth NOT OK.
Pot... a hit or two of a bowl, mmeh. Tokin a water bong = not ok.

Still, it is illegal and alcohol isn't.
I dunno. I'll let you know in a year when the state dispensaries open
.
No, seriously. I think it all depends on how much you smoke. I couple of hits, NBD you get a little fuzzy and down a bag of Cheetohs. Some 2-3 bowls and your the equivalent of drunk, not cool. I do plan on having a little when everything is in place in my state, but I know how I am and will probably do it rarely and not when I'm actively watching children. Just when I'm trying to relax/have me time. I get too worried about not having someone capable of driving somewhere in the event of an emergency. This isn't a problem with drinking cuz I drink more then DH.
Thats because you have to smoke like a pound of weed per 10 pounds of weight in like an hour or sumshit. It's like physically impossible to OD on weed. However, those who have had super adverse reaction or OD'ed probably smoked too much tainted drug. Since a lot of shady dealers put other drugs in.
Here's the difference for me:
I know how much wine my body can handle. I know that after a glass, I'll still be able to drive a car, diaper my baby, do the laundry, etc.
I can't say the same for pot. A good friend of mine recently offered me some baked products. I declined. I don't know the quality or quantity of the stuff in there. I don't know what my reaction would be or if I would be able to function in a responsible manner.
That being said, if you know your dealer, you know your product and you know your tolerance, go ahead. I just think this particular product is inconsistent and difficult to judge, thus making it a less responsible choice.
Also, as pps mentioned, if it is illegal in your state, you're just getting into a whole mess that you don't want to deal with when you have kids.
Burned by the Bear
No, they don't. But I used to smoke before kids and I will tell you that after a few bowls the next morning you feel effing amazing. Not just no hangover, but just awesome.
It is legal here. It helps me focus and gives me motivation.
I very rarely to never smoke pot anymore but it's available to me daily... Hydro, kush, purple (home grown good stuff) is a much better/cleaner buzz than that dirt green'ish brown crap we use to smoke back in the day.
That's great! I'm hoping it will help DH's OCD.
Sadly I imagine the south will have nothing to do with legalizing it. A co worker got busted with less than one gram and they gave her a ticket and she has to hire an attorney so that there's no drug charge on her record.
If my kid were older, I would have no qualms about smoking if it were legal. Not to get totally blazed or anything like that, but just to take the edge occasionally.
I'll start by saying that pot is illegal here, and possession of pot has been used as grounds for removal of peoples' children. Therefore I take a zero-tolerance policy to the the presence and use of pot around - and especially in front of - my kids. No way, no how.
That said, I have nothing against people smoking pot. Personally, I don't care for it. My experience is from a long time ago, but I did not like the feeling I got. I couldn't string two thoughts together, my reaction time was absolutely sad. I couldn't remember what I'd started to say by the time I was halfway through a sentence. And that was after notverymuchatall. There was no way in hell I could ever care for my kids if I got high now.
I don't know if everyone experiences the same thing when they get high, so I don't pretend to be able to judge their capacity to care for their kids while high. But I couldn't do it, and I'll never try even if pot is legalized in my state.
// I love you too. //
But honestly... it significantly helps my severe depression and anxiety. If a hit or two every so often helps me deal with LIFE IN GENERAL who are you to tell me I'm "terrible"?
Marijuana is and has been a medicinal plant for, like, ever. I firmly believe it helps many people who are looking for alternatives to modern medicine. It isn't all for sh!ts and giggles, you know?
Edit to ask: why do you not think pot is EVER okay?
I think if you're using wine or pot to get through normal daily activities, you have an abuse problem.
I know there are plenty of jokes about needing a glass of wine, etc., but saying that you genuinely believe wine or pot make you a better mother is a red flag, legalities aside.
How do you class anti-depressants or anti-anxiety meds? Pretty sure many woman feel like they are "better mothers" because of them.
When I'm in a "pit" it takes all the energy I can muster to get DS to the park. It seems trivial to some, but sometimes my depression makes it extremely hard to interact with DS. And that makes me more depressed. Then the next day I swear I'll do better, but then I can't shower. Depression is the flucking worst. I'll gladly take a toke to feel better and build blocks with my kid than sit in bed crying.
ETA: and at this point I should be expecting to receive the Parenting's Loudest Marijuana Supporter Award sometime soon, right?
Edited even further: I'm not trying to class women who take anti-anything with pot smokers. I'm just trying to bridge the theory that, for some women (myself as one), pot is what helps them instead of pills.
Alcohol is a drug too, you know. Is that "terrible" when you have kids?
You're comparing pot to a prescribed medication. Do you have a medical degree or a doctor advising you on what dose, how often, when, side effects, etc.?
To each their own, I guess. I enjoy my wine. I also have a note from my doctor recommending I drink a glass of red wine once or twice a week to increase my good cholesterol numbers. It also recommends almonds and Niacin, which I do but without much enthusiasm.
Medical marijuana is a prescribed medicine. I am legally able to walk into a dispensary and discuss which strain will help with what ails me.
So, you do? And when you meet with a doctor and fill out all those forms, you disclose your marijuana use?
When you meet with LO's doctor and they ask if people smoke around him, do you disclose then, too?
Yes, I do. If marijuana use is asked on a form I say yes. Do you think I'm making up medical marijuana?
Why would the doctor ask about my use while treating DS? I do not smoke anywhere near DS. It's not like we've got a freaking bong sitting in the living room and we hit it throughout the day.
No, I don't think you're making up that there are people out there who use marijuana as a medicine, but your answers on how you use it are vague. You compared it to someone with a prescription for anti-depressants, so I'm going with your comparison to see if you're actually treating it as a medicine or like someone popping pills without a prescription. Just curious, since you brought it up.
I don't know what type of medical services you use, but our providers always asks if anyone in the home smokes.
I have a prescription for depression/anxiety. My doctor is a family practitioner, who is also the doctor we use for DS. I do use it as a prescription. But when I'm not in charge of DS (he's at the grandparents' or whatever) I use it recreationally, which is also legal here. Me using as a prescription is seriously 1-2 hits off a pipe every few days.
I only get asked the "do you smoke?" questions at annual appointments like Paps... that's why I thought that was an odd question.
I'm not meaning to be snarky or rude with you. It's kind of a weird subject in my circle. My bro got kicked out of the military for smoking. He also barely graduated HS because he was too busy getting stoned. My parents now equate ANYONE who ever uses weed as a complete loser. There are plenty of people who can be responsible adults while also smoking pot, I'm happy the state of WA acknowledges this. It's not pot's fault that my bro's a eff-up... it's HIS fault.
I appreciate you being so open. You can see where my bias is, and I'm trying to navigate the subject without being too judgmental. My experience with most people who I know regularly smoke pot is that they are unable to cope with the daily routine. Which came first, their inability to cope or their use of pot is up for debate.
I know a handful of responsible, educated people who smoke on occasion, but they mostly gave it up after having children. One revisited her 20's on her fiftieth birthday. A few were in law school with me, but again, childless.
Laws are changing, and it's happening in our state as well. It's a change I'm not really prepared for, with children about to enter middle school and their bad family history to deal with. I can't see any positives about the changes, unless it means that people who were going to use anyway are now using more responsibly, but really I think it just means that people's view of it is more relaxed, which leads to more irresponsibility.
Legality has nothing to do with your kids. It's not going to be legal for your 8th grader to smoke pot. Also, and this is a big one, it's easier for teenagers to get illegal drugs than to get legal ones. The question of whether pot is legal is not going to make your kid smoke it or not smoke it.
