Natural Birth

XP from BMB: What did you do to get your baby to drop?

So I just came home from my 41 week appointment and things could be worse. I couldn't get my membranes stripped because I wasn't quite two centimeters dilated... from the outside... Apparently, I was more dilated from the inside. Baby is engaged but needs to drop lower in order to get labor going. My midwife says if baby gets lower I will go into labor. She's pretty confident that I'll go into labor in a few days (I don't know why she is so confident) but that my labor will be long. She suggested evening primrose oil vaginally as well as orally and lots of walking. I have a birthing ball. I'm hoping for some suggestions and success stories for getting baby to move down!

In other news baby is still OP (hence the long labor prediction) and no plans for induction yet but we'll be scheduling a Bio Physical Profile for Tuesday or Wednesday if I'm not in labor by/on Monday.

TIA!

  • DS1 dropped during active labour.  *shrug*

I went from nothing, no sign, no indication of labour to water breaking and 9 hours later babe being born.  I was 40w3d.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am

Yeah, you can't really force a baby to drop, it just sort of happens on its own.

Just because your baby is OP now doesn't mean it'll stay that way during labor. Try not to let your MW stress you out, labor will happen. Good luck!

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • You could try rebozo sifting - that's in answer to OP, not that he hasn't dropped.

Do you have until 42w for your home birth? Is this your first?

You should print out The Miles Circuit for your midwife if he's still OP when labor starts. I agree that many turn when labor starts - this will arm you with ideas if he persists OP well into labor.

This.  Babies can turn in labor. If you are worried about LO being OP then labor on your hands and knees.  This will help LO turn into a more favorable position.  I have no idea when my LO dropped and it was probably when I went into labor spontaneously at 39 weeks 3 days.

Yes, at 42 weeks (Next Thursday) I risk out of homebirth and this is my first.

My MW has had me doing the miles circuit since she noticed baby was OP last week.

I'm not really stressed about baby being OP because MW said they can deliver an OP baby fine but if we can get LO to turn we should. Obviously, if baby rolls over it will be easier for him or her to descend further! I am mostly stressed about risking out of my homebirth.

LO has dropped a little but my MW said that if LO dropped further it would dilate me further and probably start labor. She prescribed walking and evening primrose which I was already taking a little bit orally but she said to up my oral dose and also take it vaginally at night.

I was just hoping for more advice from TB community to see if I could get labor started soon!

I'm going to the chiro today and I've been following midwives orders. As well, my BMB suggested figure 8s with my hips on the birthing ball, lying on my side with lots of pillows between my knees and talking to the LO so I've added that to the list of Miles circuit, walking, EPO, positive visualization and staying active throughout the day!

I thought all the work was in the labor, I had no idea I'd have to work so hard to get labor stated in the first place! Tongue Tied

  • My daughter didn't drop until I was 7 cm lol. My SIL's baby dropped and engaged around 37 weeks, her OB swore she would go into labor early, but she had to be induced for going over (poor thing was miserable, too!). So I really don't put that much stock into a baby dropping to start labor. Keep doing what you're doing, but don't wear yourself out, it would suck to start active labor AFTER a full day of exercise! Try to relax, and baby will come when he/she is ready. I remember hitting 41 weeks and thinking, "Well, screw it, she's obviously never coming. I'm going to sit on my butt and eat ice cream all day today!" My water broke at 41+1.
