?natural childbirth
This is a list for all ladies planning an unmedicated, vaginal delivery. Please post here with your due date, and whether you plan to deliver at home, in a hospital, or in an birth center to be added to the list. If there are any special notes you would like added (w/doula, out of country, waterbirth, birth method, etc) then please list that as well! I do ask that, if you want to be added, you plan to come back and join the discussion regularly, as well as plan to share your birth story with us when the time comes. You are also MOST welcome to come back after your birth and give us the benefit of your expirence! Check in will be on weekday around 11am CST on the Babies on the Brain board.
Congratulations to all the November Mamas! Good luck to our December Mamas! Welcome to all our new check-in Mamas!

Tip
of the week:
It can be really easy in the day to day living to let personal time with your
SO slip away. Pregnancy can be an isolating experience in some ways (as
can TTC) because no one person's pregnancy is like yours; no matter how often
your SO puts his hand on your belly to feel the baby, he can't fully understand
what is happening to your body, and it's easy for SO to be left out of the
pregnancy experience. Making time to spend with each other without talk
of the baby, setting aside time to be intimate (even if you can't be physically
intimate) and to reconnect, talking with your SO about his feelings and worries
- all of that makes for continued good communication and a stronger bond
between the two of you.
QOTD:
We have a definition at the top, but I?m interested to know how YOU define natural birth. What are your parameters for a natural birth?

Re: ***Natural Birth Mamas to be Check In***
I think of Natural birth as being able to birth how I feel I need to. I plan to go without pain meds or interventions. I want to be able to labor at home, naturally, without monitoring or anyone bothering me for as long as possible. At the birth center I want to be able to walk, eat, drink, nap or do whatever I feel I need to do to have the baby. I don't want a doctor telling me when I should lay down or how long my labor should be taking.
See....that's a hard one for me to answer because my reasons for going unmedicated are based on a prior bad experience.
The epi just isn't an option. Period. I wouldn't be opposed to a shot of Fentanyl. I found the other stuff to be useless, so I won't waste my time on Nubain or Stadol. But, Fentanyl is REALLY fast acting and it doesn't take away the pain, it just relaxes you. So, is it worth it for 15mns of relaxation? Sometimes, it is. With my 1st, it was because I was in the middle of a panic attack.
I guess the benefit of experience lets me know what was worth it for me and what wasn't. I would get the Fentanyl again, if I felt myself starting to panic. I'm hoping the doula can help me control that instead because it took longer for the shot to GET to my room than it actually lasted! Lame!
QOTD:
I don't like that Natural birth is med-free only. I think any vaginal birth is natural, epi/induction/iv/etc or not.
I think I had as natural a birth as I could have had with DS. I was induced 3 weeks early due to Pre-E. So that included cervidil, pitocin, IVs, confined to bed and and epi. Not exactly what I had envisioned but it's what had to be done with the circumstances.
So was my birth not natural to you? Would you rather have my baby or me die? Not flaming, just wondering.

As for the question of the day - this is why the semantics become so important when discussing natural vs. unmedicated vs. few interventions.
In one sense - all birth is natural. It would be unnatural to reach the end of pregnancy and not give birth.
However, it also depends on what you mean by natural. If you mean closest to nature and the physiological and biological processes, then natural means without any interference on the part of anyone. Woman goes into labor and delivers baby, end of story.
Of course, that doesn't happen so much these days, and often for good reasons. We know about high blood pressure and low amniotic fluid and can monitor for lung development and breech position. We do interfere, sometimes with herbal remedies or old wives tales, sometimes with medication. And of course, there are many people who would argue that it is unnatural to have anyone present for the birth, or any monitoring or even to deliver in an unnatural enviroment like a hospital.
If by natural, what you really mean is unmedicated, then maybe it's best to use that terminology. It's more precise anyway. To equate natural and unmedicated, as I think most of us tend to do, we are really saying we hope to avoid not only pain medication but also induction.
To some people, natural = vaginal birth, regardless of whether medications (to speed up delivery, to start labor, to ease labor pains) were used.
I personally tend to equate natural with unmedicated birth.
There is the other factor here as well, which is the connotation of the term natural. To say that X is natural and Y is not is to imply a negative or the opposite of natural, which is unnatural. Certainly, I could easily be offended if you told me the birth of my child (which unfolded in the best way possible medically for me and for the baby) was unnatural.
I think this terminology is a big part of the tensions that exist amongst pregnant women and new mothers when we discuss birth plans and stories.
