WWYD?

So, the past two weeks I've had really swollen feet and ankles.  I mentioned it to my doctors at my last two appointments and both dismissed it.  My blood pressure has been normal.

Well, since Monday, I have literally done nothing but elevate my feet and drink tons of water and they are HUGE.  Today, I had to get out of the house and I could barely put on my gym shoes.  I was literally in tears.

My question is...do I suffer it out or do I call my doctor?  What would you do?  What will they do if I do call?  I'm just so frustrated and need some advice.

To be honest, I have been in the same situation and elevating my feet does a minimal amount. I can still wear my winter boots undone or if I just need to pop out quick I wear slippers with a more shoe like sole. If there is no protein in your pee and your BP has been ok they may not do anything for you. Best remedy is delivery is what my doc said. You could still call if you're worried, but they may not do anything. Doesn't hurt for them to know and put a note in your file though at the least.

  • I can totally relate!  Same due date and same issues.  The doctors don't seem concerned about it, but it is definitely uncomfortable and very hard to walk.  I have been trying the really stretchy diabetic socks, but not really sure if they would even help.  They haven't so far anyway.  I don't really have any advice, but I am right there with you!!  Can't wait to meet this baby and hopefully have my body get back to normal soon!
  • I have been lucky this time and have minimal swelling, but I was sooooo swollen with DS#1, it was painful. I mentioned it at every appt, and they basically said there was nothing they could really do. They told me lots of water, elevating, thats pretty much all you can do. It totally sucked. I'm sorry.

  • Well, I've heard of my friends having this problem - having to walk around in February in flip flops sort of thing. Their doctors didn't seem concerned either because their blood pressure was normal, but everything they tried didn't work to make the swelling go down. I hate saying that it could possibly be just another one of those lovely pregnancy symptoms that just happen, but it could be.
I like what a previous poster said about at least making sure they note it in  your chart at the doctors so that its there though.

  • If your blood pressure is fine, and you have no restrictions, try walking! It's the ONLY thing that helps my swollen feet. 30 minute walk and they're back to normal. Then keep them elevated to keep the swelling down.

  • I have the same due date as you as well!  And I have had this problem for a while and I have been telling them at every visit.  And bc my blood pressure is normal, and I don't have any protein in my urine so there is nothing they can do. my feet even turn purple by the end of the day.
  • Just to echo pps, if you have no protein in your urine, your BP is fine, you're doing ok in every other way and are being good about pointing it out at your visits, I think you're ok.  Some swelling is normal during pregnancy.  I just started getting fat ankles and fingers over the last 2 weeks or so which sucks.  I went this long without issue, but like you, everything else checks out ok.
  • I had the same issue. After two weeks of no relief and following a low sodium diet, my dr put me on bed rest for my last two weeks of pregnancy. I'm much better. I would insist your dr address it.
  • I am in the same boat except my swelling is goes up to my knees and I can't bend them.  My doctor wrote me a prescription for compression hose (the kind that go all the way up past your belly) and they at least make it easier to walk around and sit when I am working.  Maybe your doctor could help you out with those.

  • I had to buy new shoes because my feet grew in size. I can't even wear my UGG boots. As long as your blood pressure is normal, you should be okay. You can check your blood pressure at a local pharmacy if your doctor is not available.

    AL always welcome!

  • Yeah pretty much if your blood pressure and urine is normal, swollen feet are normal as well. Drinking a lot of water does help. My doctor also mentioned to watch your sodium intake. Sodium is in EVERYTHING and is definitely a swelling culprit.

I bought compression socks last week. I put one sock on and 4 hours later I saw a HUGE difference. Those have actually worked the best out of everything. I wear them every night.

  • If your BP is fine and you have no protein in your urine, you just have to wait it out. I use the diabetic socks and at first they worked but now they don't. I've since switched to wearing Nike compression socks and they help a little bit.
