My 12 month old and food

Is it bad that I can not get my 12 month old to eat solid food? She will try to but ends up just wallering it in her mouth till I just take it out (which is a while before I do that)I just don't know what to do about it. so I keep fedding her jar food, I don't want her ....to starve.

Re: My 12 month old and food

  • You could try just gradually adding more texture to the jar food you are feeding her... it takes a while for them to become comfortable with it. Don't be surprised if LO is gagging quite often at first.

Instead of going right to solids like toast or pieces of cheese or what not try adding finely chopped meat/veggies to the jared food she likes and gradually work up to a chunkier consistency.

I found that mixing chopped solids in with infant cereal really helped my LO because it was the first food he was comfortable with and kept the texture sort of similar to what he was used to.

  • No it just takes time. My son is still working on solids. We are slowly getting there. He has a strong gag reflex still so if he does bad with a specific food I just keep trying every few days.

  • My LO will eat finger foods, but will not eat purees with chunks.  I imagine she'll get over it eventually, but for now she'll spit the chunk out.  She's a bit of a pain :)

  • What foods have you tried with her?  Have you done things that squish easily like banana, well cooked potatoes, broccoli or mashed up sweet potato?  Those are some of the first things we gave DD.  The other posters had good ideas too.
