I just found out on Monday that my 7 month old son is allergic to milk and soy via the skin prick test. He is EBF and we found out that he had an allergy by giving him yogurt and he broke out in hives. Now it turns out that he has both allergies and needs to take the special amino acid based formula. I am still able to EBF him but I don't think that can last longer than one more month... the weirdest part to me is that I was told I do not have to start cutting out milk or soy in my diet since he's never had symptoms before. I read so many posts about moms who have to do this and I wonder why my son can tolerate some milk and soy from my BM. I am hoping this is a good sign that he may outgrow this allergy sooner rather than later....I guess I am writing to see if anybody else is experiencing or has experienced this with their babies. Thanks!!
Re: milk and soy allergy but can still BF
DD1 is allergic to dairy, soy, and eggs. I breastfed her for 16 months. We found out about her allergies just like you did. At about 11 months of age, I started giving her yogurt and cheese. She'd get red around her mouth from the yogurt, and she'd get hives where cheese touched her skin. We had her tested by a pedi allergist, and they confirmed her allergies and prescribed epipens to have on hand (we've never had to use them). The allergist and our pediatrician said I didn't need to cut dairy or soy from my diet since DD1 never reacted to my breastmilk, and that I could keep nursing her.
You can switch LO to the hypoallergenic formula, if that's the route you want to go. Or you can cut dairy and soy from your diet and keep bf'ing (or you can keep your diet the same and continue bf'ing).
With DD2, she is milk and soy protein intolerant. She doesn't have an allergy, but she has an intolerance (there's a difference). When she was about 2 weeks of age, she became super gassy, colicky, and her poop became bright green, mucousy, and had ocassional specks of blood in it. I cut dairy and soy from my diet and after about 5 weeks, her symptoms cleared up. I was completely dairy and soy free until she was about 10 months old. Then I started reintroducing dairy and soy, and she's done fine with it. I've only had dairy and soy in packaged foods though, I haven't tried eating yogurt, cheese, butter, milk, etc. yet, but I plan to soon.
The good thing about childhood allergies, is they are usually outgrown. We've had DD1 tested a few times over the years and she's on her way to outgrowing her allergies. And she can tolerate her allergens when they're baked in. So she can eat regular bread, and processed foods that contain her allergens. She just can't have straight milk, eggs, etc. And likewise, DD2 seems to be outgrowing her intolerances.
If you're interested in changing your diet, I post a check in on the Breastfeeding board on mondays for MSPI Moms. We talk about safe foods and recipes that are dairy and soy free. I link the check in over here too. You can read our previous posts at mspimoms.blogspot.com. Another great recipe resource is mspimama.com. HTH!
