Success after IF

Anyone know anything about DHEA-s levels?

So I've heard about how DHEA-s levels and DOR are sometimes related. Since I'm in the process of dealing with this insurance appeal, I got a bunch of records from my RE and noticed they tested my DHEA-S levels.  The level was 227.  The problem is, the "normal" range is cut off the page on the lab report, so I can't see if that is normal or not.  In searching on the internet, it seems to be normal.  Just wondering...

Re: Anyone know anything about DHEA-s levels?

  • So crazy that you posted this ... I just asked Kaf7 (I think that's her SN??) about DHEA and was tossing around the idea of seeing if I could have my level(s) tested.  I've read that taking that can help with DOR, but my acupuncturist said you shouldn't take it unless your body has a deficiency in it.  Doesn't sound like your levels are abnormal???

Yeah, everything I have heard is that you should not take it unless you are low because if you take it and you are on the high side (or even the high side of normal), it can do more harm than good.  It can be either androgenic (converts into testoterone) or, in some women, can convert into estrogen.  I am not sure exactly how that works.  It is just what I read on Livestrong.

Some websites say the upper range for healthy women is 220 and others say it is "270."  Either way, it sounds like I am on the high side of normal (or slightly above normal) so it was definately a good thing I never took it.  I had asked my RE about it one point taking it and he told me absolutely not to take it, so I am glad I didn't now.  I don't know why he never told me my results.  I am guessing that on that labs range or assay or whatever it is called that my results were not out of normal range so he did not consider it alarming.

  • My RE told me not to take it as well, but I'm pretty certain my levels were never tested.  He told me it can mess with your hormones, but I have read a lot of success stories so that is why I asked my acupuncturist about it.

My RE also told me not to take the Chinese herbs as well though and I just ovulated on day 14(!!!) of my cycle for the first time probably in my entire life and had no mid cycle spotting this time around so I'm glad I didn't listen to him with this stuff.  We'll see how long my LP is this month.

  • I took DHEA (fertinal) for 3 months and it worked.

I also did acupuncture and took herbs to help with my ovulation, follicular and lutheal phases.
