1st Trimester

1st Doctor's Visit?

What was everyone's experience with their 1st appointment?  Is it necessary to see a primary care doctor first, or should you just call the OB/GYN?  What tests were involved in the 1st visit?  Needless to say, I'm a little worried.  The more details, the better!!

Re: 1st Doctor's Visit?

  • I'll start at the beginning.

I POAS and got a positive result, so I called my gyno, she ordered a blood test to confirm and told me she didn't deliver babies so I needed to find an OBGYN for the pregnancy.

I had the pregnancy confirmed with a blood test and found an OBGYN practice.  They wouldn't see me until I was approximately 7 weeks so I waited.

First appointment they took some blood and did an ultrasound and I filled in some paperwork.

Second appointment I only met with a nurse who talked me through the elective testing, cord donation procedure and all of that stuff.

Third appointment I saw the doctor, I gave a urine sample, she listened to the heartbeat, checked my weight and BP and sent me on my way.

Every appointment after that (until the weekly appointments in the end of 3rd Tri) was pretty much the same procedure: urine sample, heartbeat check, weight, BP "how do you feel?" and out.  She started measuring my belly around 30 ish weeks.

I had the NT scan at 11 weeks and anatomy scan at 18, 19, 21 and 22 weeks (nothing was wrong, Olivia was very active and the tech couldn't get solid pictures of everything she needed to).

That's what my experience was but offices do things differently.  When you make your first prenatal visit, ask what to expect.

  • FTM here, I got my Positive 4 days before my Missed period!  I called my office and asked for Progesterone testing, they also did 2 HCG's to see if they were doubling.  Then I waited until exactly 8 weeks.  I thought I was going to have a full visit, but Nope just had a dating US and saw (did not hear) the HB.  Never saw a Dr. or nurse.  I go back March 26th for my first visit with the Dr.  I haven't had any additional blood or anything drawn.  I did not need a referral but my OB is a GYN.

  • My insurance does not require a referal, so I just called an OB.

During the first visit, I first met with a nurse who reviews what is expected, goes over my history, and walks through a ton of material.

The doctor comes in and talks with you. This time I got a pap done since I was due for one this coming fall. I didn't need one during my pervious pregnancy, so that was skipped. Depending on how far along you are, they may try to find the heart-beat. I always test early, so this is also skipped.

Then there is a urine test and blood test to check for all sorts of things. My office does not actually verify pregnancy, home pregnancy tests are very reliable. More testing for other health problems.

No reason to be worried. This is what they do and the first appointment generally walks you through it.

  • I called my OB. Got an appointment with a nutritionist who went over my medical history and the do's and don'ts of pregnancy. She handed me a bag of reading stuff and some samples/coupons. My office then has an u/s, followed by bloodwork and seeing the OB. It IS normal to not have an u/s at the first appointment as many don't do one until 20 weeks. Oh and I also got a pap again.

Hey what was your progesterone and hcg level? If you dont mind me asking...I'm in the same boat and they called me today and my hcg was only 12 :/ I have to go back every two days for a week to test it.

  • Thanks everyone. I called my OB, and apparently I have to go for blood work and an ultrasound before even seeing her in over a month. I thought that was a little strange. When they do an ultrasound so early on, is it like the ones you see on TV with the gel and thing they hold on your stomach?  I'm such a whimp when it comes to doctors and needles, so this will be an interesting 9 mos.
