What would you do?

So DH really wants to go away this weekend just the two of us. DD will be 5 weeks old. We also have a 14 month old son but I'm not so much as worried about him since he's spent the night at grandmas before.

I'm just really torn on what to do. He wants to take me to Mall of America which is 3 hrs away from where we live and get a hotel room and go back home the next morning. He really wanted to surprise me but i made the poor guy tell me where he wanted to go lol. The kids would stay at his parents who i trust completely and are great with the kids. I am just feeling guilty for leaving DD for that long when she's so young.

On the other hand DH and i have been having a little trouble getting along and have been fighting quite a bit and its really taken a toll on our relationship. Mostly from stress from his job and trying to adjust to two kids under two. So it would be really great to go and reconnect. DD is also EBF so i know i would have to pump. I have enough milk in the freezer for her if we decide to go.

So what would you do? I'm not looking for anyone to tell me directly what i should or shouldn't do. Just looking for some opinions and what you would do or if you have left your child so young before. Thanks!

I would go, I think.  I've been missing alone time with my husband and we've been fighting more, too.  I'm sure I would miss my baby like crazy, but I think I would also enjoy the break and the chance to reconnect, and I would come back recharged and with more energy.

  • I let DD spend the night at the grandparents at 3 weeks. It was stupid hard and I missed her like crazy but with the PPD and the lack of time with my man I really needed it. Now I'm seriously thinking of letting her go back again this weekend cuz man the sleep was nice and grandparents are ALWAYS asking for the baby anyway.

  • I would have a hard time leaving baby with someone else at that age. Our DD is almost 3 and has never stayed the night away from home either lol. BUT, what we have done in the past is have a friend or grandfolks go with us. We paid for their room which we got right next to ours and let them take DD for the day and if she happened to fall asleep in their room, all the better! So we were able to have our alone time, the grand folks got a trip out of it, and we were still just feet away from DD. Likely, this is what we will do this summer when we do our annual trip to the ocean as well. Granted, spending the extra cash on a 2nd hotel room can seem steep, but for my own peace of mind, its totally worth it.

  • I wouldn't leave a 5 week old EBF baby for more than two hours (1 bottle), but that's just me.  DS1 never stayed overnight somewhere until we had to leave him to go have DS2.  Neither of them will probably spend the night somewhere again until they are school-aged.  A date night in town I would do though!  I could use one of those myself. :)

I would go out to dinner, but I wouldn't feel comfortable being gone so long with a 5 week old baby.

  • GO!  I would give my left arm for a night away right now.  Your marriage is the foundation of your family so prioritize it!
  • Our babies will be left overnight with my parents next week at 6 weeks.  This is out of necessity though as I need to go out of town to interview for a new job and SO is going with me.

I know she could stay but like others have said we are making this a one nighter with a date night in a different city etc.  I felt as I was going to have to be away anyway, having SO there would make me less crazy, make sure LOs were somewhere with two sets of hands (instead of leaving SO alone overnight) and give us some alone time with great sleep.

I am not in love with knowing I will be away from my boys for about 30 hours as letting them take their two hour nap in another room is hard but it is what is best for our family.  I also agree it has nothing to do with trusting someone to watch them, just being away and being so emotional as it stands.  Our boys are eff so that makes it a bit easier.

Do what is best for your family and don't forget that happy parents make for a happy home and happy kids so if you two need the time to reconnect take it especially if you aren't sure when it will come again!

  • I wouldn't go, but then again Im a different extreme in that my kids have only been away from me overnight when I've been in the hospital.
