ENT appointment scheduled

Yup. Now it's Hunters turn at the ENT. Caleb had his 2 week post OP appt today and I scheduled Hunters appt when I was there.

We saw Hunters doc right before Caleb's ENT appt and I was right. Hunter has ear infection 7. 7! So doc gave him the ENT referral for tubes

Thank God I have good insurance!

Re: ENT appointment scheduled

  • Next Thursday. I tried to get them both seen today, but the office troll, I mean receptionist, wouldn't allow it. Grr

Oh jeez! Did Caleb have tubes also? From what I heard from my friend who had to do the procedure with her 8 month old, it was pretty quick and easy....but you probably already know that :

No tubes for C. He just had his tonsils and adenoids out 2 weeks ago bc he had sleep apnea.

    These kids! Oy!

I have a feeling we are not far behind you. Shayne went to the doctor today and has ear infection 3 since January, she said if it not cleared up by the 21st with this round of antibiotics then he will need to see the ENT. Boo to ear infections!

Poor Shayne! I've heard tubes are NBD though. Tonsils and adenoids were rough. I won't lie

Tubes really are a fairly minor surgery all things considered. Some of the ENTs here will do tubes, tonsils and adenoids all together [assuming kid needs it]...

I'm sorry the receptionist wasn't more helpful though. I'd be mentioning it to the ENT directly...

It's interesting how different healthcare is in different countries. The AAP just released a statement about ear infections, antibiotics and tubes. Basically less antibiotic therapy and tubes after 4 infections bc it's hard for antibiotics to "get to the middle ear.

Is that fairly similar to Australia?

Denise, can you tell me how to find this statement? JA is on his 3rd double ear infection in 2013. They told me he would need to have at least 6 infections before tubes. I would rather him have tubes sooner and less antibiotics. He has been on antibiotics for over 30 cumulative days just this calendar year so far!  And, every time we go back for the follow-up the ear is never fully healed..they will say his ears are now "inflamed" but not infected and that they may be healing. They have not "healed" yet after this..what happens is that I have to wait until he is pitiful again and for it to be "infected" to get new medicine..we are in a vicious cycle and my baby is the one suffering! I am about to go momma bear but would love to have this statement to back me up!

I will warn you...I haven't read the whole article. My info came from a Medscape email that referred to this paper, but Medscape requires a log in. So here's the whole wordy paper lol

7?!?! That's just crazy talk! nbsp;Well I'm glad you can get the tubes asap and get it knocked out sooner rather than later.

Yup. I honestly think it just never goes away. I think the fluid just stays there

So it seems the current recommendation in Australia is something similar:

Quote: "The current recommendation for tympanostomy tube placement is three or more separate episodes of Acute Otitis Media in 6 months, or four or more episodes in 12 months"

And if there has been lingering fluid in the middle ear for more than three months, ie Chronic Otitis Media, they are also recommended.

Unfortunately it seems sometimes the GPs [our equivalent of your PCPs and who most children see as opposed to a paediatrician here] will often do antibiotics, or worse yet nothing, for a long time first before referring to an ENT. It really bugs me because I think you're lucky to have a child 3 years or less let you look in their ears for more than half a second. Trying to fully observe the ear drum in that time is hard enough.

I think a lot of doctors that aren't ENTs think their visual diagnosis is enough. I respectfully disagree. I can't always see a pinhole perforation of an ear drum after looking for 10 seconds that an ENT may tell me is there. Sure if the drum is hugely bulging it might be immeadiately apparent there's an issue. But redness could be a number of things contibuting and it would make far more sense to me to get the kid in even for a 5 minute test to confirm the status of the middle ear, rather than hoping you saw everything in half a second for ear ear.

Also there's just too many parents I see who don't want their child to have surgery. Not a majority but too many anyway in my personal opinion.
