Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Placenta Pills?!?

I have a friend that is due in May & she asked me today about Placenta Pills... I had read that Holly Madison is going to be taking them.  I guess after the baby is born they take your placenta & make it into pills to take & it helps with energy, increasing your milk and a few other things.  I'm not sure what to tell her cause it sounds like a stupid celebrity thing... just wondering what you ladies knew about it.  Thanks!

  • I don't know much about them but I would never do it.

  • It's supposed to have amazing benefits especially for ppd...I def thought twice about this go around but it would have been a pain with our hospital.

  • I did it. It really helped me feel normal. DH could always tell when I didn't take them, I would be extra weepy and b!tchy. It really helped the hormone crash.

How long do they last you? I'm thinking I'd like to do this.

Depends on the placenta. I got 112 pills out of mine and they lasted about 2 months.

  • I've heard about them and was even curious to try them, but it sounds so disgusting that I felt sure I was going to get weird looks from DH or anyone else who might know about it. And how do you begin the conversation with the person who has to collect it for you? On the other hand, I could have definitely used some help in the hormone category. Maybe next time.

It's not a "stupid celebrity," thing; it's just not very common in mainstream circles. My anecdotal experience is that it is helpful.

I wasn't trying to be rude- I just hadn't heard of it prior to reading about it online with a celebrity.  I obviously offended you.

  • It's very common, so yes your comment can offend people. You're calling something stupid when you just admitted you've never heard of it.

Anyway, I personally didn't do it but I debated it for a long time. A coworker has two kids - she did it with one, not the other, and she swore up and down the pills are amazing. They helped with her hormone crash, her hair didn't fall out, her skin glowed, and her milk supply was also very good.

  • A co-worker of mine recommend them so I asked my OB about it.  She explained that in societies (past & present) where women don't get good nutrition that there are/were nutritional benefits from it.  She said that for women here in the U.S. there is no need for it, we don't have malnutrition issues where we might be lacking in the micro-nutrients provided by the placenta.
