prenatals causing nausea?

So I remember my last pregnancy a vague notion of thinking the prenatals were partially causing my nausea. (I had some pretty bad morning sickness from about 6 weeks until my 6 or 7th month, ugh.) I remember taking them at night and thinking it helped... but I was obviously still sick.

This time around, the last two days I've taken the prenatals not long after my breakfast and I've been super nauseated both days. Today I decided to hold off and I've been able to eat (a lot) more and I don't feel sick.

Anyone else have an issue like this?

Re: prenatals causing nausea?

  • Only if I do not eat before I take them, if I have them with a meal I am fine.

This. They make me sick if I take them without food.

This is true for me even when I'm not pregnant...so not really m/s related.

  • I've been eating breakfast first and then taking them. Maybe I'll start trying them with a bigger meal, like dinner and just go to bed. Sleep off the sick feeling.

I totally had this same problem and had to switch my prenatals. At first I thought it was morning sickness but noticed it would start after I took the pill. Since I switched on Monday I've had no sickness!
  • Yes! They made me very sick. Very, very sick. I had to switch to Flinstone Gummy Vitamins with DHA and Folic Acid. I think it's the iron that was making me so sick. I do get my iron levels checked every few weeks to make sure I'm ok though. My OB said if I was going to throw up all day, it just wasn't worth it.

  • Yes I've found if I take it right before bed it helps me a lot!
  • I don't have any previous experience with this, but I was advised to take them later in the day with food in your stomach. I've been taking mine later in the evening, but not right before bed, with lots of water.

  • I know how to fix it! You have to take your prenatal vitamins after you lie down to go to bed. I have been doing this for months and the only times I get nauseous is when I sit up after taking it. If that doesn't work, try the gummies, those should do the trick :) GL!

I have the exact same problem.  If I take them in the morning-- doesn't matter if it is on an empty stomach or if I eat something small-- guaranteed to throw up within 20 minutes.  I have been taking them at night about 30 mins before bed with a lot of water.  I haven't had a problem since I switched to nights-- I think because if they still make me a little queasy I am sleeping so I don't even notice.

  • If I don't take mine at night, yes, they make me nauseous.
  • Thank you so much for all the advice everyone! :) I'll try the at night with water and food... and if that doesn't work, gummies it is!
