Babies: 6 - 9 Months

sleeping through the night?

My pedi told me she should be going 9 hrs or so of straight sleeping. My LO does 6 to 7 every night. 9 seems like a long time. So can a 6 month old really go 9 hrs without eating? I am wondering if I should try to start making her sleep longer between feedings.

Re: sleeping through the night?

  • DS just started STTN at 6 months. Even now, at 15 months, he still occasionally wakes up hungry. Don't make her sleep longer between feedings-if she's waking to eat, she's hungry. And I hate it when pediatricians spout off random ages/weights/whatever that babies should magically start sleeping well. Its all bullshit. Babies STTN when they're ready, not before.

  • I've read several times that most 6 month olds are physically capable of sleeping for 12 hours without requiring food.  With DS, he did not STTN until he was 9 months old.  DD, my little angel, started sleeping 12 hours at night when she was just under six months old.  If it doesn't bother you to wake up, i wouldn't try to fix it right now.  But the idea that babies only wake to eat if they're hungry is not completely true.  Plenty of babies wake to eat because that is what they are used to.

  • No advice here, but mine still wakes up twice per night :( I dont want to cry it out b/c he is in the smaller percentiles and he doesnt eat much. So when he wakes up I feed him every chance I get.

  • K used to sleep through the night, but now wakes up for comfort nursing. I think it varies by baby.

  • My LO can sleep 9 hours straight and sometimes he does but it's not a regular thing.  Generally he sleeps about 6 to 7 hours and then wakes up and I feed him.  I could wean that feeding, he doesn't have to have it, but I just haven't done it yet.

Nothing new I sorta agree with all posters. Every baby is different. You have to do what you feel comfortable with end of story.
  • Pretty much what PPs have said.  Yes some babies can go 9 even 12 hours at 6 months, but not all will.  I wouldnt force it.

This is me too.  makes for long night wakeups when you have to pump either before or after doesn't it?

every pedi seems to have a different opinion.  i have a younger one, and she said that 12 hours of sleep at 6 months is expecting a lot.  enjoy it if they do, but don't expect it.  6-9 hours is perfectly normal at this stage.

  • We feed DD 6oz shortly before bed. she sleeps 11-12 hours a night. Have been since about 2.5months. Very grateful for her taking after her daddy in the sleeping field.  Though she only naps 2-3 times during the day for an hour tops. I think her sleeping that long at night is what made my supply tank.  Cause I did not have it in me to get up when I didn't have to.

  • My baby is 7 months old and sleeps 10-11 hours straight every night! I've always had a great bedtime routine since he was 2 months old so bedtime is at 7:30 every night! Now naps...... That's a whole different story!! :// he naps great at Mother's Day out but when he's home with me it doesn't happen!!
  • Your baby needs sleep just as much as he needs to eat. There are ways to encourage STTN without CIO, and it doesn't mean ignoring or starving your baby. Sleep is a family health issue. Everyone is healthier when babies sttn.

They can do it but that doesn't mean every baby is ready to do it. My baby slept through the night 3 months and now at 9 months is waking up a few times a night. Darn teeth has turned her into a horrible sleeper. lol
