  • Don't use them. Unsafe and unnecessary. If you get to the point where LO is sticking limbs out of the crib, you can use a breathable one, but I wouldn't waste your money on buying one right out of the gate.

  • We didn't use them. The time that you would "need" them for is very brief and doesn't warrant the expense IMO.

  • Never used them, never missed them. IMO the advantage is 99% cosmetic and that's a silly reason to add a SIDS risk to your nursery.

  • There is no reason why a newborn needs one other than decoration. A newborn is not active enough to worry with bumping into the crib. Why introduce a SIDS risk? Once they are older, you can use a breathable one if needed. At that point, they are moving and repositioning themselves and SIDS risk decreases anyhow. I've never needed one even then because they manage to put limbs over or under and move the bumper anyhow.

  • We put them in at 5 months to avoid constantly having to go in and get legs and arms unstuck from between the slats. By then he was moving around and he has been fine with them since (he is 12 months now). I didn't see the need before that.

Agreed!  We did, however, use a breathable mesh bumper for a few months when DS was scooting his way around the crib but still too little to figure out how to disentangle if his arm or leg slipped between the crib bars.
