Temper Tantrums Already??

Come on man... I thought he would at least be halfway to two before temper tantrums started :( Naturally he has always whined if I take something away from him but not in a tantrum kind of way... I just give him something else and he's fine.

Well, DS doesn't fully walk yet, he still holds onto my finger most of the time. He ALWAYS wants to go outside, but sometimes we can't. If I try to divert him away from the door, he throws himself on his knees, thrashes his body, and starts screaming and crying. He is not easy to distract afterwards either. What happened to my happy baby??? :(

I did some research and apparently it is normal at this age since they can't voice what they want and don't understand why you are saying no, but I really wasn't expecting it. Anyone else's baby, *ahem toddler*, throwing temper tantrums?

Re: Temper Tantrums Already??

  • Madison went through a phase for a few wks right before her bday where she would kick her legs, flail her arms and scream and cry when she was told no.  I couldn't believe she was throwing tantrums already!!  The past two weeks, she hasn't thrown any tantrums like that, but she will get whiny and cry if she's told no and moved away from something.

  • DS has a freaking temper and a 'tude on him as well. If you take something off of him, remove him from somewhere he shouldn't be, or DAAARE to say "no", he can go OFF. I am dealing with it by very calmly stating "no, E, we mustn't touch that"... over and over about 500 times, and when he flips out, I again, very calmly tell him "no, not ok."

it's driving me batty, but I guess this is where the attitude teaching begins

  • Annabelle has been throwing them for 2 months. And it's been driving us crazy. BUT when I tell her that she can't do something, she throws the tantrum and doesn't do it. So, I guess that's ok? We also try to redirect. :/

  • Yes. When Audra doesn't get her way or you take something away, she immediately throws herself on to the ground and starts whining and rolling around. It's actually quite funny :)

  • Yep.  Last night he hit me when I tried to give him banana, he wanted blueberries.  They were both on his tray, he was refusing to feed himself so I was indulging him.  I told him no and went back to eating.  He screamed and I ignored it, he was putting his face on his tray, laying sideways, really pathetic...and he would stop to put food in his mouth, check to see if I was watching, then resume.

I took pictures and DD and I continued our conversation, he eventually stopped.

  • Oh and DS remembers what he isn't allowed to do. I have taken a candle off of him soooo many times, and now he reaches for it slowly, looking me straight in the eye the whole time. I'll say "No, E, you know you can't touch that", and he will pull his hand back, and then very slowly reach for it again. He is completely challenging us and pushing boundaries. I think this is what makes them a toddler lol not some arbitrary age.

Yes! This is a huge issue for me. There is a floor lamp in our playroom that he constantly wants to knock over. I always say "no" very firmly when he starts to play with it, but he keeps doing it while looking at me. I honestly think that he thinks it is some sort of game because he will smile when he does it. If I go to move him away from there he giggles like I am "going to get him."

So when can we use reasoning and have them actually understand?? Who knows. Discipline is very hard at this age.

  • Not sure I'd call it a full tantrum yet be she has been getting her body involved along with a different cry when things aren't going her way. It just started this week. I just ignore it.

  • I am so glad you posted this. I thought it was just G. He gets everything he wants at ILs house and now it's biting all of us in the arse. He's whiny and cries if he doesn't get something or go somewhere he wants. When he goes to something that could hurt him ie. floor lamp, fireplace, etc I say DANGER instead of NO. He has started to repeat me by saying YanYer and will leave it alone most of the time. I was sick of telling him no for everything a d my friend suggested it. It seems to work most of the time.
  • Oh yes.  OMG it's crazy it's like the tantrum switch flipped on.

I have tried using stern voice but I think he's so use to me yelling at him he doesn't pay attention.  But if I use my dog voice (high pitched squeaky sound) he looks at me and pays attention.

I swear having a dog was pretty good training for a  baby!

  • Emma threw a gnarly tantrum yesterday. I wouldn't let her play by the stairs. We have a gate, but they're a winding stair case and the top is surrounded by cast iron bars and she likes to sit and let her legs dangle. It gives me a heart attack every time. I kept grabbing her and walking away and finally I blocked off that part of the house with a big chair, and when she figured out that she couldn't go over there she started screaming and walked over to me. I put my arms out to pick her up and she screamed louder as she hit my hands. I was in shock. I kept trying to talk to her but every time I started talking she would scream louder. Oh boy. So finally I grabbed her and sat her down and let her cry. I just walked away. She eventually stopped.

I dread the day she does this in public.

We've been having tantrums for about a month as well, but after implementing Happiest Toddler we're seeing a lot of improvement. He focuses on acknowledging their feelings first and then redirecting them. We were skeptical because it kind of makes you sound like a moron, but it's definitely helping. Our tantrum length has decreased significantly.

  • DD started having tantrums around 7 months.. I thought that was crazy! She's generally pretty happy-go-lucky with everything these days, but when she has her sights set on something and your interrupt her... watch out! She'll arch her head back, flair her arms, scream her face off, the whole nine yards. Luckily for now, it usually only happens when she's tired and cranky.
