I know these are a big "no-no" and I understand the reasons why. However, I am wondering if anyone uses them?
So far we haven't used any kind of bumper whatsoever. DS is in a helmet though, and lately he likes to move himself around until his head is touching the side of his crib--when he moves around I can literally hear his helmet banging into the crib slats. This of course wakes him up. Not a huge deal, BUT...in a few weeks he is scheduled to get weaned off the helmet. I'm concerned that at that point he's going to be hitting his bare HEAD into the crib slats which, from the sound of the helmet hitting the wood, will hurt. I'm wondering, since he can fully roll both directions, push up off his chest, etc. if putting a bumper in the crib might help the transition to him sleeping without his helmet.
I will ask the orthotist at his next check up too but wanted to see if anyone here uses a bumper for similar reasons (or other reasons too). Thanks!
Re: Bumpers
We had the regular bumpers in there at first, but there was time where he slept up against them, so we changed over real quick! He doesn't even sleep up against them anymore.

No. If we were going to, we'd use these: https://www.amazon.com/Go-Mama-Designs-Bumpers-Chocolate/dp/B002UHKMS6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362454758&sr=8-1&keywords=individual+bumpers
A little expensive, but worth it, IMO. I don't think the mesh bumpers really provide any cushion, which is what it seems like you're looking for.
SCANDAL!
I actually have these and love them. DD was constantly banging her head against the crib slats and actually had red marks on her forehead from it, so I bought these and haven't had a problem since. If you google around you can find some decent coupons for them too.
I bought these and didn't like them. DD is a thrasher to the point was was causing her own bruises on her hands, legs and face. Breathable bumers weren't enough so I bought these. First problem I hated was when I wanted to change her sheets I had to remove EACH ONE because the mattress doesn't come up enough to put a new sheet on otherwise, so that was a pain.
We stopped using them though the day I heard DD screaming bloody murder and ran in her room to see her arm through the bars of the crib but these bumpers made the space too tight for her to pull her arm out again. She had rolled over and her arm was twisted, I don't know how she didn't dislocate her shoulder. The concept is there for these, but I'm never using them again (which is a shame because they are so expensive).
We use regular bumpers now without any problems. I'm confident that at this age DD is more than mobile enough to move away from the bumper if she can't breath. She's not a little newborn anymore.
The sheet thing might depend on your crib and mattress. I have no problem changing the sheets and don't have to remove mine to do it. As far as the arm through the slats, I'm sorry that happened, it sounds scary! My DD hasn't done that at all.
