I live in st paul park which is close to both. what are the type of experiences you have had? The ob i see usually delivers at united so i figured i would go there. I would just like some opinions.

Thanks everyone!

Re: united hospital or Woodwinds

  • I delivered at Woodwinds with a midwife, and had a great experience and wouldn't hesitate to recommend delivering there. I mainly chose Woodwinds because it's very close to our house. The facilities are nice, and I thought the nurses/staff were friendly. At Woodwinds you would have the opportunity for a waterbirth, if you were interested. At Woodwinds, they do "rooming in" where the baby stays in the room with you at all times following birth, but I thought that was good for initial bonding, learning to take care of a newborn, and establishing breastfeeding.

I don't know much about United, but have generally heard good things about it. I have a friend who will be delivering there in a few weeks. I believe United is hooked up to Children's Hospital, so it probably would be best to choose United if you like the peace of mind of them being better equipped to handle things if there was a problem with the baby. Woodwinds has a special nursery to handle common, minor complications in newborns (such as jaundice), but we were told our baby would be sent to Children's if he had any major difficulties.

  • I also don't know much about United, but I have never heard anything bad about it. I delivered at Woodwinds and I loved it. I had to have a scheduled C section due to DS being breech. I loved the nurses and the room was very nice. I also liked that they offered a breastfeeding class at the end of the hall every day.

  • I also delivered at Woodwinds and had a good experience. I really liked that the baby was in the room with us all the time. I also had great nurses during my stay.

  • Woodwinds is fantastic!  I had a great experience delivering my twins there.  The only reason I wish I would have considered United is that my boys were born at 35 weeks and were immediately transferred to children's (connected to United).  So I spent my first night as a mom miles away from my babies :(  if for any reason you have a high risk pregnancy United might be worth a look.  I believe they are redoing their birth center so it might be nicer now!  Otherwise, woodwinds all the way!

  • I've had friends who have delivered at both.  The only negative I've heard about Woodwinds is if your baby has a higher level of needs they'll be transferred to another hospital.  From a visitors stand point, the hospital is gorgeous and free parking is always a plus.

My friends who delivered at United had very positive things to say about it too.  I thought them rooms seemed a lot smaller and parking is less convenient.

  • I was originally going to deliver at united but after touring it I wasn't satisfied and didn't like their setup. I think they may have since remodeled. We ended up switching OBs at 28w so we could deliver at wood winds. And we were so happy we did. We had an amazing experience at wood winds and will be delivering baby #2 there as well. I would highly recommend it

  • I delivered at united in the summer of 2010 and had a great experience. Unlike pp said I had the same nurse for both my days there. All the nurses were great and helped me out alot with the millions of questions i had with my first baby. One of the reasons i picked united over woodwinds was for it being connected to children's so if something went wrong help was just minutes away.
  • I've heard mixed reviews from friends who delivered at United and nothing but great reviews of Woodwinds.  I also delivered at Woodwinds and had a fabulous experience.  I will absolutely be delivering their again with this pregnancy, even my husband was impressed by how supportive and caring the staff was.  He still talks about one of the nurses, Trista, who made our experience so great.
