Dreft?

Is Dreft dye and scent free? I thought it had scent to it. Everyone keeps telling me I should use it, but I have seen on here that a lot of you are planning on using Tide Free or similar detergent.

Re: Dreft?

  • I've heard Dreft is actually full of dyes and perfumes, but lots of moms (including mine when I was a baby) use it for their babies' stuff without problems. Then again, I've also heard of moms just using the regular detergent they've used all along without their babies having any problems, so who knows?

I don't even know why we're supposed to be washing baby clothes in perfume and dye-free detergents (is it because ALL babies have sensitive skin, or is it just as a precaution?), but I went ahead and switched from Tide Victory Fresh Febreeze (bought solely because Drew Brees was on the bottle) to Tide Free and Clear, just in case.

  • I've always just used All Free and Clear for our laundry after LO1 was born. It seemed a lot easier than buying a separate and more expensive detergent just for the baby. It worked out well for us.

Eta My son had suuuuper sensitive skin as a baby, and I could always tell when he wore clothes that hadn't been pre washed or clothes had gone through the wash at grandmas house with different detergent. He would get little red spots. Never had that issue with the regular free and clear though

  • Dreft has lots of fragrances and dyes added. We use whatever brand of free and clear is on sale. If your LO doesn't have particularly sensitive skin, you would probably be fine using Dreft, but I prefer not to have added chemicals.

  • Dreft is like a baby powder scent and FULL of chemicals and crap.  I believe as far as mainstream detergents go, you're better of going with something like regular Tide or something.  Also, yes, baby will be touching your clothes so you can just use what you use on your own if there is no reaction. I would personally never use Dreft because of all the junk in it.

Before DS was born, we switched over to Charlie's Soap for all of our laundry and I have been in love!  We cloth diaper too and it is safe for that purpose as well as being environmentally and financially friendly.  There is no scent to it, it cleans AMAZINGLY well anything I've thrown at it and for our family of 3 that does a lot of laundry, we only use one little tub of it every 2 months or so and I use Amazon's subscribe and save to get it delivered to my door for only like $11.

  • FTM here.  I washed all the baby's clothes in All Free and Clear per recommendation by Baby Bargains...come to think of it that book better be pretty spot on b/c I bought most of her things based on recommendations in that book.  :)

  • I am washing baby's clothes in the same detergent we use. I am switching to tide original after this bottle of liquid is gone. I'm using tide for our cloth diapers and think it's silly to have more than one detergent. If baby has an allergy, we will switch up our detergent, and even then we will only use one.

I did a test run with tide, only using 3 tablespoons for a load of laundry and it worked great. I highly recommend it!! Plus, i can get a giant box of it at costco dor pretty cheap! Score!

  • We used Dreft on some of the clothes I've already washed. I like how it smells, but once the bottle is gone we'll go back to the Tide free and clear.
