Prenatal Yoga???

Hello ladies!

I am really interested in being healthy and fit during my pregnancy so that I can have an easier (hopefully) postpartum recovery and have a stress release during the tough pregnancy days. I hate to say it, but I don't really exercise at all and so when I found out I was pg my husband and I started walking a a few times a week. My question is can I buy a prenatal yoga dvd and it be safe to use even though I have never done yoga? I really don't want to spend a lot of money on classes but I also want to be safe for my baby. Are prenatal DVD's safe and easy enough for me to dive into (with my DH doing it with me) or should I do classes until I understand better what to do with my body. I only weigh 120 and don't have bad knees, hips, or anything like that... just never got into the exercise thing lol! Any advice about these DVD's would be GREAT!

Re: Prenatal Yoga???

  • I dont know much about the DVD's but I do know that in a yoga class I used to attend there was a woman there who did modified yoga with us and she was VERY pregnant! I saw her a few months after and she said she really felt like it made an amazing difference with her delivery.

  • ive heard its pretty low key. but I would ask your dr just because you are not active I assume it would be ok but just because you werent active I would just check with your dr first
  • 1. Ask your Dr.
    2. Go to pro yoga instructor and ask questions. Tell them your situation and ask a million questions.
  • The great thing about prenatal yoga DVDs is that they have three ladies in them in first tri, second tri, and third tri (at least the ones I have), so there are modified versions of everything.  Talk to your doctor before you start anything new, but my doctor gave me the all-clear last time to do yoga even when I was otherwise activity-restricted due to placenta previa.  It kept me sane.

  • I took a normal yoga class when I was pg w LO and just made adjustments as necessary, but ive been taking yoga in and off for years.

I just got a prenatal yoga DVD and its really easy. If you've never done yoga before you should check w your dr first. Some hospitals even offer prenatal yoga classes

  • Thank you! I have my first dr. Appt tomorrow so I will check with them. I def like the idea of doing yoga at home at first so I don't feel ridiculous lol but I will contact a yoga instructor for extra questions after my dr gives me the ok. Thanks everyone!
  • The place I was looking into says that if you don't do yoga regularly prior to being pregnant, they prefer you don't start until your in the second tri. That being said, they are probably just protecting themselves legally, so like PP have said, check with your Dr. It is probably the safest thing to do if you didn't exercise before, low impact and low cardio.
