Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Purees to Table Food

We have been on purees now for 5 months.  They do really well with all foods, as long as they are smooth.  I have tried every soft finger food I can think of and they both throw up every time.  We had some fleeting luck with Mum Mums but that's hit or miss.  Has anyone had success with going from purees to table food with babies that have some serious texture issues?

  • I think a lot of babies have texture issues in the beginning. Just keep at it and eventually they'll get the hang of it.

We did banana and avocado as his first finger foods since the texture is pretty soft with them.

  • Just keep trying, they'll get it eventually.  We started with puffs and cheerios and eventually fruit, veggies, cheese etc.  LO still does not like things that are too squishy or slimey, like bananas or kiwi for example, but I keep trying.

  • We started with puffs as well, and we also took the rice cereal and added it to the purees to make them thicker, slowly increasing the texture ourselves. That way, if it was too thick, we could just add water. If you have chunks, you can't really add water to that.

  • Do you make your purees? If so, try slowly making them with more texture before getting into finger foods. Then try soft, small, diced versions of the foods they've already enjoyed: banana, carrot, avocado, squash, etc. Plain Cheerios were also a big hit for us.

  • My kids both did better with hard foods than soft slimy stuff. Cheerios were a good transitional food. Remember that gagging is normal and how they learn.

  • I do make my own purees, I have thickened them up but they gag on those also.  I will try cheerios, I tried broccoli that was super soft at lunch and I got to see what they had for breakfast.  Thanks for the suggestions!

  • DS loved cheese. That got him over the transition pretty quick! Oh and puffs.
