budget-friendly baby-proofing

DS is  wild man!! We are needing to get more serious about baby-proofing asap. We have some basic things done and keep him out of certain rooms, but I'm looking for some budget-friendly baby-proofing ideas. All the outlet plugs are done.

Is there anything budget-friendly for the following:

corners of coffee tables--its actually where the tv sits, so not a coffee table in the center of the room

surge strips

I know they sell things for these items, but I was just looking for any suggestions (not necessarily for just those 2 items) before going out and dropping a pretty penny we don't have this weekend.

TIA!

Re: budget-friendly baby-proofing

  • We got corner protectors, lazy susan lock, cabinet locks, surge protector covers, freezer lock, oven lock and tv mount for about $50.  I didn't think that was too unreasonable.  The tv mount was the most expensive-around $19, but was necessary.  I work in a hospital and cannot believe the number children that come in with severe injuries due to heavy tv's falling on them.  We purchased our babyproofing at babies r us and had a coupon which helped.  Amazon also has a lot of stuff that isn't too badly priced.  It certainly isn't anything fun to spend money on...but necessary.  Now if only I could find something to keep my little guy out of the dog food dish!  I dont think they make anything for that though--except for a watchful parent  :)

  • Our DS broke the locks for cabinets so I just use elastic bands.  Most of our power strips are behind furniture so there is no way he would get to them and fortunately for us our living room tables are round.

  • Have you checked on craigslist?  I don't know if you need gates or not, but that's where I got ours for super cheap (I think like 5 ish each), granted, they're not fancy or anything.  I'm sure you could find other stuff too, just make sure it's nothing that's been recalled.
  • There are actually a lot of do it yourself ideas on Pinterest. Maybe check out a consignment store. Also price compare Target, amazon and babies r us (with a coupon) before you purchase.

  • DS hit his head on the coffee table several times and then he figured out it hurt and he never hits his head now. It sounds hars, i know. I just didn't want to be like my SIL hovering over her 1 year old every time she got within a foot of anything. So unless you have extremely sharp corners i would say it is unnecessary. You could also look for a long self adhesive strip at a hardware store, similar to the crib rail guards.
TV and securing all cabinets and shelves to the wall is an absolute must.
