MOTY...puking in crib goes unnoticed...

Who was it that wrote that their LO puked in the crib, but they didn't realize it?  I remember reading that story and feeling bad for everyone involved. Well, it happened to me and I feel like total sh!t.

A was napping today and woke up at the usual 1hr mark.  She fussed (as she normally does) then a few minutes later fell back asleep.  I thought I heard something weird, but nothing distinguishable as puking. And I didn't notice anything on the monitor.  Well, she woke up a little bit later screaming...I ran up to her room and as soon as I hit the door I smelled it. I walked to her crib and she was covered in vom.  I have never. ever. felt so horrible.  I immediately started bawling, which incidentally didn't help the situation one bit.

There is no point to this post except that I sucked today as a mom, I should have checked in at the weird noise.  Needless to say, Ash watched unlimited amounts of The Muppets today and I'm drinking.

ETA: My grammar sucks tonight...but I'm not changing it...apologies.

  • It was LCass, I believe.  I experienced something similar just recently.  I went to get her out of her crib in the morning, and her crib was covered.  She never fussed, never made any noticeable sounds indicating she vommed all over.  I felt terrible, too, but I found that it must happen to a lot of parents.  I mentioned it to a couple of my local friends, and both of them said the same thing happened to them.  Don't beat yourself up.  How were you to know, really?  You don't suck as a mom.

Thanks, I'm sure it happens all the time...you just feel like a butt when you can't do anything about it.

  • Awh Samuel has done the same thing. Not made a sound or just done his usual fussing. I felt awful.

  • It's pretty common. A friend of mine went to wake her kids up to go on vacation and found both of them covered in puke. I felt so bad for her.

  • That sucks!! I've heard of it happening to several people. When DD puked in my car, she coughed once and then I heard liquid splatter. Definitely not vomit noises.
  • Poor Ash. The same thing happened to K once when she was still sleeping in our room. I felt awful. DH is constantly reminding me that babies are resilient.

  • It *almost* happened to me too. E was fussing a bit in the night (nothing out of the ordinary) and made a strange sound. DH told me we should check on her, and I said to let it be and go back to sleep. He got up anyway and found her covered in barf. I felt really bad.

  • Thanks guys, I feel better today reading that it is a pretty common situation.  I think I was just having a weird {read: hormonal} day anyway.

  • I'm sorry you're feeling bad, but don't beat yourself up.  My LO is a puker and will puke not just when sick but if she cries longer than 5 min, if she eats something she doesn't like, if she coughs too hard, etc., I've had the same thing happened, and I didn't even realize she puked until the next morning when I went to get her.  I felt awful too, but as pp stated, they're thankfully very resilient.  Hope the drink took the edge off :)

  • Another one here! DD puked during naptime once and I didn't know it until I went in to get her. You're not a bad mom! Hugs!

  • It's ok Anasazi! When DD puked in the car, it didn't sound like puking at all.  She just made a little whimper/cry noise and then she was quiet again.  I didn't know she puked until I could smell it.

Yup, that was me!  It was just before my BFP but we were pretty sure I was pregnant, so we thought that it was ms when I started puking.  We'd heard her make little sounds a couple of times, but that's not uncommon especially when she's stayed up later than usual (we'd been out for dinner for my birthday).  So she probably puked starting around 10pm or so, but we didn't discover it until the next morning at 7 when I found her crib and the floor COVERED in puke.  I felt sooooooo bad, but she really hadn't given any indication that she was sick.  We were stupid not to check once DH started puking and it was clearly not ms, but by that time we both felt so lousy that we didn't even think of it.

Sorry A was sick, but don't feel too badly.  You never would have left her if you'd known.  And at least it was only a nap, not all night.  Hope A feels better and that you forgive yourself (I know it's hard).

  • Awwww! I am sorry that your LO is sick! Don't feel bad though there is no
Way you could have known any sooner, so don't beat yourself up. The one time I walked in to B's room and there was puke from one end of the crib to the next, I got that same feeling! But like you there wasn't anything distinguishable on the monitor that would make me check, until he started screaming!

  • Happened over here last night. I saw it early this morning and she ended up spending the rest of the morning in bed with DH and me. She's perfectly fine this morning scarfing down the remainder of my bagel and some grapes. Don't beat yourself up. It happens.
