No Energy

Hi Ladies--

I have been struggling with tiredness/low energy since my little mister was born.  I had some issues during and after my pregnancy with kidney stones and kidney infections that required surgery which certainly didn't help matters.  I finally was able to start consistently exercising about 3 months ago which I thought would help give me more energy.  I get up every morning at 4:45 to get to the gym by 5:15, complete my 45 minute workout and head home to get ready for work and my little guy for daycare.  I work full time and then have most household and childcare responsibilities due to my husband being a football and track coach, so he does not get home until 7 or later.  My day starts early and stays busy until Brecken goes to bed around 7:30.  I know that some tiredness after a long busy day is normal, but feel like my energy level has been tanking even more the last few weeks.  I'm wondering if any of you have any suggestions to boost energy.  I dont currently take any multivitamins or anything like that and have been wondering if maybe that would help.  I try to watch what I eat and have cut out all caffeine from pop/coffee out of my diet.  I will probably visit with my doctor about this at my son's well baby check in a couple of weeks, but am interested in any suggestions you may have until then.

Thanks a bunch! :)

  • I'm not big on suppliments, but when I'm dragging more than usual, I make sure to take my Calcium suppliment that includes Vitamin D. Especially at this time of year (the end of winter), you're Vitamin D levels can be extremely low, causing your exhaustion. A few years ago, my sister had her level checked and it was so low, she had to go on mega doses for several months to replenish her supply. Her symptom: exhaustion.

I've also heard good things about B6 (you know, the one for morning sickness) helping your energy levels. It's the main ingredient in those 5 hour energy drinks.

  • 1. Vitamins can help, but if you take them with milk, you're counteracting the iron and if you're relying on the iron, it could make you anemic.

    2. How much protein do you eat? Is your diet full of carbs or protein, fruits and veggies?

    3. I find I have more energy when I eat foods with fewer preservatives. Make sure you decrease fast food.

    4. Have your thyroid checked when you go to the dr.

    5. Do you snore? Is there a chance you have sleep apnea?

    6. See if you can find some down time in your day. If possible, hire a babysitter for just one hour so you can relax or rest.

  • I honestly think anyone would be beyond exhausted with your schedule -- it could simply be the beginnings of burn out. Try going to bed early for a few nights, drinking lots of water and eating mostly whole foods with lots of protein and complex carbs.

I know we almost all struggle with this, but try taking some downtime for yourself once in awhile -- it'll mentally refresh you, which could manifest physically.

  • It's very common to have a thyroid issue after birth. I would get it checked. I agree with the vitamin and food suggestions also. But, give yourself a lot of credit, your day is very busy and full. Working full time and being a mom is not easy and very exhausting.

  • Thank you for all of the suggestions and encouragement ladies.  It definitely is not always easy finding a balance with everything.  All of my kidless friends think it is as easy as changing when I workout and going later.  I've considered it, but I like going in the morning because Brecken is still sleeping and it doesn't cut into my time with him and I dont have Mommy Guilt that way.  I think I do need to start some sort of multivitamin and probably tweak some things in my diet.  For the most part we eat pretty healthy, but there is always room for improvement.  I never thought about my thyroid, but it is a great idea to get that checked out.

    Thanks again! :)
