Re: Brag Day Wednesday!

  • Nothing big, but a few little wins lately...

Lily started vocalizing around her trach several weeks ago. Now, she will attempt to say the words we ask her to say. And, I would say she's pretty accurate, in her own whispering way.

Her fine motor skills are improving. She can now nest her nesting cups and stack one block ontop of another.

  • Last night I cut my son's toenails for the first time EVER!!!! He is a few months shy of 4yo. My husband did not understand why I was going on and on about how proud of DS I was.

    Small victories :

  • My dad has had blood work on his liver so I took it upon myself to work on DS saying "grandpa" for two weeks.

DS called "grandpa" by name twice on the phone on Monday.

  • On Saturday and Sunday morning, Chris got out of bed, climbed into our bed and then came right up to my face (and then his dad's) and waited until we opened our eyes.  Once we did he said "Hi!" with a kind of goofy smile on his face.

    He never says 'hi' unprompted.

    This sounds adorable. :)

DD1 had a dentist appointment on Friday. I can officially say that she is a freaking pro at the dentist. She went through everything -- scraping, polishing (with our kid toothpaste from home), flossing, and rinsing with the little water shooter and the sucker-thingy -- with such a great attitude.

It's been a really good week for us. Tomorrow is her IEP annual (we re-opened in December to tweak goals). I got their assessment of her progress that we'll discuss at the meeting, and the words "wonderful progress" were used more than once! I talked with her SLP earlier this week and she told me that sometimes she goes in with a plan to work on a conversational skill only to find DD1 has already mastered it.

    I'm so proud of her!

And I'm going to stick in a little brag on DH, too -- he filled out the pre-IEP-meeting paperwork asking about our thoughts on DD1's progress and what type of goals we think need to be addressed tomorrow, and he was spot-on.

  • Nothing big happened in our little world but my son has started asking his daddy to play baseball with him outside. This is so fun to watch because normally he doesn't want to be outside because the wind blows in his face, the grass is itchy, suns to bright, the cars are too loud etc. So to say the least getting him outdoors to play has always been hard so big plus for us, but to add an active non techy/artsy patterned oriented physical activity is a super big plus for us.
  • We have an ABC song we sing that has words that go with the letters....A apple B baby C Cookie D Dolly.....H hammer....etc. We were waiting in a long grocery line and I decided to play an alphabet game with Nate expecting the answers to be words from the song...

What starts with C? he signed Cat....hmmmm... D? he signed Dog. I am thinking to myself Dang! So I asked What starts with H? He signed Hat.  I am floored!

ETA: I forgot one...E is supposed to be Elbow, he signed Elephant!

DS hates the phone.  He'll talk for maybe 10 seconds before he's done.  It's a bummer since my family is not local (closest is 8 hours).  I just got an Ipad mini (brag on DH it's was an incentive at work and he let me get something). DS talked and interacted with my sister for an hour and 45 minutes.  He showed her his dance moves (my sister copied, I so wish face time had a record function...awesome.  He  showed her his toys, begged her to show him her toys etc.  we all just had a blast.

He's doing great at school. Great in therapy. good at home.  We've been kind of plateau-y the last month or two and he's just sky rocketing in progress again.

  • It's little, but my DS told us he had to go to the potty while at OT today. His diaper was still dry. I was so excited when we back to his therapist and we both praised him for it. He is in the largest regular store available diapers and I was starting to stress about finding larger ones.

  • DD says "hi" and is using the sign for more!  I would have been ecstatic for one of those!!

  • I got some of Chris' evals from school.  When he started preschool at age 3 his expressive language was at an 18 month old level and he was understood 10% of the time.  He was tested at age 5 years and 5 months.  His expressive is all caught up and he was understood 90% of the time!  There are tear marks on his papers :)

Jon is progressing in math nicely.  He is in typical math now and doing well :)

Matthew had his first phone call for a play date tonight.  A friend from the boys' class called and asked to talk to him; he's never had someone call and ask to talk to him and then come over to play!

  • Though I know it seems small to the "typical" people around me....the other day I was laying on the floor trying to take a mini break and DD came over, "signed" she now pats her chest instead of leg dog, I asked her is she was being a dog, and she barked and me to the far kitchen window barked again and sure enough like 100 feet away there was a dog outside rolling around!

This is huge as she doesn't show or tell and actually led me when I didn't get it and no one told her to "show mommy the dog" we were home alone :
  • DS can climb to the top of the stairs! He stops to eat the carpet every few steps, but he can get all the way to the top by himself.

Isla hasn't cried this week when I dropped her off at preschool.  Soooo relieved.  Her teacher says she holds hands with her friends and has so much fun once she's there.  I can tell she's already made friends because when we come in two or three of them are all "Hi Isla!"  It's so cute and I'm so proud of her for getting used to it quickly.

I so happy to hear this! I know you were worried and it sounds like she's doing great.
