membrane sweep

i had my 39 week appt today @ 39 and 4 and i had my membranes swept. i've read/heard a lot of things can alter its effectiveness, such as its less likely to be effective on the first try with FTM's (which i am), its more likely to work if youre already dilated past 1 (im a little more than 3), but also less likely to work the higher up your cervix is (in dilated and effacing but my cervix is still kind of high).

so i dont know what to expect! haha. it was pretty uncomfortable but not really painful and i contracted some for a few hours afterward but now im not anymore, just crampy and LO is going cray-zay! if you've had your membranes swept, what was your experience?

Re: membrane sweep

  • Same here, at 39 weeks 3 days...felt kind of crampy afterwards, was up most of the night because of what I think we're mild contractions (not painful, just a little uncomfortable and annoying enough to keep me awake). Lost mucus plug the following day but now I seem to be at a standstill. Occasional tightness and twinge of pain but nothing regular...hoping things pick up soon.

I'm definitely interested to hear about others' experiences with this too.

  • FTM and I had an appointment today at 38 weeks 4 days and I was 2 cm and 80% effaced. He has been super low for the past 2 weeks and at a 0 station so I asked for a sweep. I haven't felt really any difference other than he's been moving a lot and I have to pee A LOT!

  • I was 40 weeks and 4 days at my apt yesterday, 3 cm dialated and 50%effaced. Doc swept my membranes yesterday at apt and today lost my mucus plug. Nothing else going on yet though.
  • I had it done with my first pregnancy. It was my 39 week appointment. I think I was 3 or 4cm. I forget how effaced I was. But I had it done in the morning, had noticeably stronger contractions all day that were irregular. I woke up around midnight in labor with painful, regular contractions. I had DS by lunch time. So I would say that the membrane sweep helped me along but from reading other people's experiences on these boards, I'd say I was in the minority.

  • 40wk+3 and got membranes swept at my appt today.  I'm a FTM, 2cm and 70% effaced.  I feel no different than I did last night or this morning.

  • With DD, I had my membranes swept at 39 weeks around 3pm.  My water broke that night at 1130 and contractions started 15 minutes later.  the contractions came on quickly and very painful.  i labored for about 14 hours, with 4 hours of pushing.  I am getting mine swept again this time around on Tuesday and I am hoping it does the trick as well.
