TMI - perineal massage/stretching

Does it work?  How often/much do you do it?

I have a huge belly and can't really reach that far, but I don't want to have to ask DH to do it.  Seems odd for someone else to do that 10 minutes a day.  But I'll do what I have to in order to prevent tearing!  DS has a BIG head just like his daddy so it could do some damage.

Advice???

Re: TMI - perineal massage/stretching

  • I have not been convinced that perineal massage has any positive impact, and it hurts like a biotch. I didn't do it last time and won't do it this time.

Things I will do instead to try to avoid tearing: spinning babies exercises, yoga, and chiro to encourage a good position, ask for warm wash cloths on my perineum as it's stretching in birth, change positions in labour and push in the position that feels right, try to push/deliver slowly

Thanks for this.  It's good to consider.

My doula recommended a prenatal chiro.. I've never been to one before, is it a bad idea to start something like that now?  I'm 35 weeks tomorrow.

  • I don't think it's bad to start chiro while pg. I just started seeing a new one because my old one moved away. It helps a lot with back pain/sciatica if you've had any issues, and I do think that a good alignment can't hurt as far as helping baby be optimally positioned for birth.

This is a dumb question but how does good position affect tearing? Is it just related to the baby not being sunny side up? Or are ther other suboptimal positions that can happen? I'm really trying to minimize tearing this time around too...

  • Instead of an awkward perineal massage I've told my DH we just need to DTD to keep my muscles stretched and flexible. Much more fun!! Lol!

Well, my last baby was OP which pretty obviously impacted my 90 minutes of pushing and third degree tear. There are other variations of positioning that aren't 100% great, but I don't know a lot about all the possibilities.

I just don't like the idea of purposefully hurting my vagina before labour. It doesn't really make sense to me.
