Food issues at work

This is sort of a vent and may seem petty.

I bring my lunch to work everyday. I've started putting my frozen meals in freezer part of the fridge with my name on them. I also bring some crackers to eat with my meal. I started out just bringing the box to the lunch table (I eat in the teacher's lounge) with me and eating a few and put the box in my mailbox in the lounge after I eat. Well, every day a different co-worker will ask if they can have a few. Some days several of them ask. I got tired of it because I was going through way too many boxes of crackers and i only eat like 3-4 a day. So I started getting the crackers out and putting them on a napkin and immediately putting them back in my box before anyone could ask for some. But now I've even caught one co-worker getting the crackers out of my mailbox and eating them in between classes. And today after school I was in the lounge and noticed my cracker box in the trash. Someone had got them out of my mailbox and eaten the rest of them. I'm really non-confrontational so I haven't said anything yet, but I'm getting super annoyed. How would you handle this situation? I feel petty because it's just food, but at the same time food costs money and people can get their own dang food!

  • People are so strange!  I would never eat someones food without asking, let alone the last of it and then throw it away!

Can you portion out your crackers in baggies? Then only bring in a baggie a day?  MH has to do this with his pretzels for very similar reasons.

  • I would portion them out like PP suggested and put several baggies in a container with a lid so you're not bringing them everyday. I would also post a note somewhere in the fridge that you know someone finished your box of crackers and are expecting a replacement. If I knew who ate them I'd call them out publicly.
  • I will start using baggies again. It just seemed wasteful to use baggies when I could just portion them straight out of the box, but I know now I'm going to have to. I'm pretty sure I know who did it, but I'm not positive.

  • I am the crazy b!tch who would put a mouse trap into the box...
    Seriously though, what lopes said.

  • I second portioning them out. WTF is wrong with people? We're stealing crackers now?

  • And you can get reusable sandwich bags on Etsy for not too much. They're even cheaper if you don't mind using a small binder clip or similar to close them. With seals they're like 6 bucks and pay for theselves soon enough. This cute one is only a dollar and it has velcro.

Remember the episode of friends with ross and his sandwich? You should leave a crazy note!

I love Friends! There's always a solution to a problem in every episode.

  • Please leave a note. That's jackassery and so worth calling out. You don't even have to be direct, just something to the effect of "whomever ate all of my xyz brand crackers, I will be expecting a replacement box in my mail slot by Friday. Thanks in advance for doing the right thing."
July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

  • People are out of their damn minds stealing others food at work! I agree with the others about portioning them out again.

Here's a story you'll appreciate since you are a teacher. A couple if years ago one teacher bought Popsicles for her class and put them in the freezer. Another teacher came and stole them, and gave them to her class! They were labeled and everything!

Seriously? I would be beyond mad! I keep everything labeled in our fridge, but had assumed my mailbox slot would be safe for other things. I was clearly wrong!

  • Take one bite out of every cracker and put them all back in the box.

  • This type of thing used to happen all of the time in my sorority house.  I even used to write notes on my food saying things like I'm sick and I spit on the food.  People would still eat it, people are disgusting and rude.

  • You need some kind of liquid laxative. Coat every single one of those crackers, and leave them in your box.
  • Can you keep your crackers in your classroom? I often bring soup for lunch and keep a box of crackers in my closet in my room.

  • I seriously don't understand people.  How on earth would anyone think it's okay to take someone's stuff - food or otherwise?

I second the reuseable bags.  I have a couple I use for LBB's snacks.  But I'd also start a rumor about the terribly contagious ebola I have.

  • How incredibly rude. To steal a couple of cracker is one thing, but to eat the last of the remaining crackers and then throw the box in the trashcan - that takes some balls. People suck.
  • When I was pregnant with DD someone stole one of my frozen meals from the freezer at work. I left a very nasty note saying something like "To the jerk who stole the pregnant lady's lunch - there's a special place for you somewhere it gets really hot"

I couldn't exactly tell them they were going to hell - but that's what I was getting at. I'm pretty sure it was a member of the cleaning staff, but it never happened again because I labelled everything with "Crazy pregnant lady".

    Good luck.

  • I found out who it was today. Our secretary caught her taking them and told her she better tell me about it. Well, the thief wasn't there today, but tomorrow I'm going to tell her to buy me a new box.
