Parenting after a Loss

Update on DS

DS is still SO sick.  The nebulizer treatments only "help" for like an hour or 2, and then he's back to heavy wheezing.  He still has SO much congestion in his chest.. every breath he takes you can hear everything moving.. even after the nebulizer treatments, you still hear all the congestion in there.  He hasn't eaten any solids since Friday.. purees, we've occasionally tried, and he'll eat some, but ends up coughing and vomitting them up.  In the beginning he was doing good and still taking most of his bottles, but for the past 3 or 4 days he's had no desire to even drink a bottle.. the past 2 days have been even worse, because after we give him a bottle, he ends up coughing so bad that he spits up half of it.  We've been adding an extra ounce or 2 of water to each of his bottles to thin it out more so it's easier to swallow, and that seems to be helping prevent him from spitting up, but he's still only taking 3-4oz at a time.. so maybe 12-15oz a day when usually he'd take close to 30 and have 3 meals of solid/purees?? And, he's now had diarrhea since last night :(  DH ended up getting him some pedialyte earlier this morning, and he's taken about 3oz of that over the course of the day today.. but, still, I'm worrying about him getting dehydrated on top of being so sick.  His diapers are still "wet", but nowhere near their usual.  I guess as long as he's still peeing we're okay..

I just feel so sad for him.  DH has taken the week off of work to be home with him, and he did take him back to the ped yesterday for a follow up from the ER on Sunday.. she basically just said to keep using the nebulizer treatments until this clears up.. but didn't really give any other explanation (not sure what I was hoping she'd say to him though..).  He had a fever initially, and then was fever free Sun-Tues, and then last night spiked a 102 fever again.. so far today DH has said he's been fever free.

It's just so all over the place.  At least he's gotten a LOT of sleep today.. I'm hoping this means this BEAST is on its way out.. when he's been spitting up, there's been tons of mucous in it.. so hopefully between that and the diarrhea and the extra sleep, this means whatever virus he's gotten is passing on through!

I absolutely hate this. It's scary enough hearing him wheezing.. but now coughing and choking on mucous.. ugh.  He just looks so exhausted, too.. his poor eyes look so sad.  My heart is breaking.  I've had sobbing fits multiple times because i feel so guilty that he's gotten this sick :(  I just want to go home and snuggle him :(

Is he on antibiotics, have they done an RSV swab, have they checked his lungs by X-ray for pneumonia?

This sounds so serious and it seems like your doc isn't taking it as seriously as it is.  An infant who is wheezing and not taking in normal fluids and has a fever that comes and goes should be checked out more - not just given a nebulizer and sent home.

I would get another opinion - like from a pediatric hospital's ER.

    A wheezing baby is scary.

Have they checked his pulse ox lately?

Good Luck - i hope he is feeling better soon!

i feel this way, too, in a lot of ways... But neither the ER doc or my ped seemed concerned that it was anything more than something viral.  He has slept so much today.. Like 7 hours n naps and almost 12 hours ver night last night..  When I got home from work this evening he actually sounds a lot better than he has.. And usually nights are worse.. I'm staying home with him tomorrow and Friday, but hopefully this is a step in the right direction!  He's drank 2 whole bottles (though cut with extra water) his last 2 feelings, and has drank like 4oz of pedialyte earlier.  I've already decided if the wheezing is still really bad tomorrow, I'm taking him back to the peds office.. Oh, and DH asked about RSV when he took him Tuesday, and again the ped didn't seem remotely concerned.  He had a bad cold (though not nearly this bad!!) in early January and ended up on antibiotics.. I would imagine that's why they are trying t keep him off them now.. This would be his 3rd round of antibiotics in 7 months... We will see what tomorrow brings... But I definitely feel MuCH better just seeing this little bit of improvement between this morning and this evening!! And, fever has been gone all day again today... Is 102 too high to be. From teething?? Sorry for typos.. On mobile
