Baby Showers

Jewish Baby Naming Ceremony/Party

My husband and I were thinking we would really like to do this for our little girl, but neither of us have ever been to one, so we are kind of at a loss of where to start with the planning.

Anybody host or attend one recently that can give us pointers?  I know it's a newer concept, and it seems like the "rules" or suggestions vary widely.  What usually goes on?

Re: Jewish Baby Naming Ceremony/Party

  • We recently attended a baby naming ceremony/party back in September.  The event was held in the parent's club house in their condominium complex.  The Rabbi came and said a blessing over the baby and announced her hebrew name.  After that there was a lunch buffet.  It was very simple but a lovely celebration.

Honestly it can be as big or as little as you deem appropriate.  If we have a girl we will be having her named on the bimah in front of a Torah.  Afterwards, or sometimes soon after, we will likely have people at our home for a luncheon.  If we have a boy we will have a bris with a luncheon.

Bagels, egg salad, lox, smokeys, sloppies, balloons... Done. And obviously rugelach.

  • I agree with previous posts that there's different options. I found this website helpful from kveller.com:

  • We had our baby naming during our Temple's Saturday morning service. We then paid for the food for the kiddush they have after. We didn't make a big deal out of it. Close friends and family came to the service and kiddush, we just informed people by word of mouth. We will likely just do the same for this baby.
