S/O Cute Holiday Traditions...Non-Clicky Poll

The easter egg basket post made me think of some of the other cute holiday traditions that my parents (okay, let's be real, my Mother) had for me that I want to also carry on to DS and hopefully this new LO.  Not just Easter, but other holidays too...so...

What cute/interesting/meaningful holiday traditions did your parents have for you that you are totally going to adopt for your kid(s)?

Re: S/O Cute Holiday Traditions...Non-Clicky Poll

  • Oh goodness.  There were lots.  Here's a few:

St. Nicholas Day (Dec 6th) - put shoes outside bedroom door and wake up to small gifts/treats inside.

St. Lucia Day - baked or bought a special kind of Swedish bread with cardamon that we had for breakfast. (I don't think I'll be this motivated.)

Christmas - baking traditional Italian cookies; leaving snacks and milk for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph; no going out to the tree until the lights were on (that's how you "knew Santa had been there" or, in reality, when she and my Dad were up); Santa does not wrap gifts (saves on wrap and wrap confusion); opening stockings first.

St. Patrick's Day - green food coloring in my glass of milk in the morning.

  • Since I totally consider my birthday a holiday...I was born at 8:10 at night.  Growing up my mother never let me open presents until 8:10pm!  When you are little that wait is a killer, plus she used to taunt me with them all day long.

  • I feel like my family (aka my mom) was overly into holidays and honestly, I loved it growing up. I still do! I definitely want to do some of the same things, and start some of our own traditions as well.

For V-Day, we always got one of those hearts with the assorted chocolate candy in it and then we'd get a card and some other small goodies (like cute V-Day socks or fashion jewelry or something). It'd always be waiting at our spot at the kitchen table first thing that morning.

Easter - the Easter bunny always left our baskets full, again at the kitchen table where we usually sat. My mom always put tons of cool stuff in there...some candy and chocolate - always a hollow chocolate bunny, and usually some other things like a movie or again, socks, jewelry, makeup, a gift card. I know that when I was little it probably had more candy and stuff like toys, but this is what I remember.

Halloween - We always went trick or treating and we'd stay up that night and eat some of our candy and unfold the sofa bed in the living room and have a "scary movie night" slumber party with our parents. I have such good memories of this even though I am sure we were watching rated R movies in like elementary school and having nightmares, LOL. To this day, Halloween is my favorite holiday.

For Thanksgiving we just always watched the Macy's parade that morning for sure...and we usually watched the lighting of the Christmas tree that night. We still do that.  : )

Christmas...there are just way too many things. We do the typical stuff like leave cookies and milk out for Santa (and carrots for the reindeer), our filled stockings were always waiting at the foot of our beds when we woke up Christmas morning, etc. We always open ONE gift on Christmas Eve and it is ALWAYS pajamas. LOL In addition, we read the story of Christmas (Jesus' birth) every Christmas Eve. We also watch It's A Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve.

Well that is a hugely long explanation of stuff. Anyway, I am used to celebrating holidays pretty extravagantly and I liked it that way growing up, so I am trying to maintain that for our family as well.

That's a cute idea, dd's birthday is st. Patrick's day, so we kinda want to make a big deal about it.

  • Easter we always did baskets but it was never anything out of the ordinary.

St Patricks day we always made sure to wear something green (more so to avoid being pinched by my friends at school than anything else). And my mom always made corned beef and cabbage for dinner.  MH hated corned beef when we met but he had only had canned stuff (didn't even know that existed, is that what spam is or is it different?) but once he had the good stuff he now likes it so I've continued this tradition since we got married.

Thanksgiving is the biggest holiday in my family. My mom is an ER nurse so she has to work it every other year so it became a tradition that we do it on Saturday and all of the extended family comes (some 50 or so people). We have 3 turkeys, a ham and all of the fixings and afterwards there is always a poker tournament with no buy in and the winner gets Cheesecake factory gift cards. We will try to make it to this as often as we can, this last year was the first year I missed since we live in another state now and I was too close to my EDD so my Dr told me to skip it. I won't be taking over this tradition since I live 6 hours away, so I don't know what will happen when my mom decides she's too old to do it, maybe my siblings and I will do the cooking and we'll still have it at her house? It's hard to know since 3 of the 4 of us are in different states now.

Christmas: Because of my mom's work schedule she'd always either have to work Christmas eve or Christmas day and when I was younger she worked nights. The rule was always that we couldn't come downstairs until mom and dad told us we could so years when my mom worked Christmas Eve we would all be sitting at the top of the stairs waiting for her to come home. If she got home late some times dad would bring us our stockings on the stairs to help keep us entertained while we waited. We would then rush to open all of the presents before mom fell asleep  and play with our new toys while dad made breakfast. On years that my mom worked Christmas day we'd just wait at the top of the stairs until mom and dad came out of their room then we would all go down and open presents and spend the morning together before mom had to lie down and get some sleep to work that night.

  • Too many to name them all, but I'm all for keeping traditions going and starting some new ones.

  • I didn't really have any traditions: Christmas Eve mid night mass ( but I don't believe in God), jelly bean "hunt" and waking up at our house every Christmas.

The waking up in our house I will keep.

I plan on adding a big birthday morning celebration. Balloons, busting through crepe paper type thing.

Christmas cookie making. Festival of Lights, open stockings first.

Corned beef and cabbage and green milk

    Easter egg hunt...

my DH has a bunch of traditions and we will make a few up for our selves.
