Natural Birth

Thank you note wording

I had a crazy string of bad luck with my old OB's office, which led to me switching to a wonderful midwife group. But then we found out when I was 7cm dilated that baby was breech, I got transferred to the on-call OB, and he actually let me deliver vaginally. I have seen the midwife again and thanked her for her role in my birth, but now almost 8 weeks later I still feel compelled to thank the OB again. Only I'm not his patient, so I'll likely never see him again.

So, I'm writing a thank you note to mail to him, along with the group picture after DD was born. Thing is... I'm terrible with words. So, if you don't mind, proof read this for me? And give it to me straight. If it's terrible, I'd rather you tell me than write a super embarrassing letter. I'm trying to express how much it meant to me that he let my body birth the way it's supposed to, and tell him that I know how rare it is to find an OB like him. I'd normally just have an IRL friend proof read for me, but none of them understand the sentiment at all... I hope no one minds me posting this!

Dr. XXX,

I am so thankful that you were the doctor on call when Midwife found out my baby was breech. I know how rare it is to find an OB who is trained in breech births and willing to attend one. I think it's wonderful that you didn't automatically jump to a c-section, and instead I got to have my ideal birth experience despite the baby's presentation. I know she and I are both happier and healthier because of you.

You took the time to patiently discuss our options and risks and let us decide what we wanted. It was a comforting conversation in a very stressful moment and I'll never forget how calm I felt afterward.

It seems to come so naturally to do, and I know you do this every day, so I feel silly writing this in the first place but I think you deserve recognition for being a great OB. Had I never switched practices halfway through my 3rd trimester, or gone into labor at a different time on a different day, my delivery would likely have been my worst nightmare instead of a cherished memory. You have truly made a difference in my life.

Thank you.

Re: Thank you note wording

  • I think I would change the last paragraph to:

"I think you deserve recognition for being a great and caring OB. Had I never switched practices halfway through my 3rd trimester, or had I gone into labor at a different time on a different day, my delivery would likely not be cherished memory like it is today. You have truly made a difference in my life."

Also, I think it's GREAT to thank people for doing their jobs well. I'm sure you'll make his day, if not his month.

As a nurse, we receive thank you notes all the time, but often we don't remember the patients because we've either not cared for them personally, or they only stay a short time. However, we cherish the notes and one written this beautifully would make any provider feel so special and proud to have made such a lovely impact on someone. You'll definitely make his day and I'm sure he'll proudly display it at his office.

An update: I mailed the card on Monday afternoon. I got a call this morning from my midwife - apparently it made the OB's day, and he called the midwife about it. She called me to thank me for sending it. Apparently things like that help keep the working relationship between the MWs and OBs a good one. A very positive, unintended consequence - but I'm happy it helped in that respect as well.
