Re: Anyone vaginally deliver a SUNNY SIDE UP BABY?

  • yup. both of mine were!

Labor with DS was FAST - 3 1/2 hours start to finish. My water broke first and then contractions started about an hour later. I felt them in my back and my legs, which freaked me out because it's not what I had read about and thought the expect. However, I don't know if it had to do with his position or because I was progressing so quickly. 20 minutes of pushing, 2nd degree tear, no drugs.

I was induced with DD and had a feeling she was also sunny side up. It was probably a pretty text-book induction (pitocin, wait, break my water, wait, push). I had back labor again, but it was manageable with counter pressure. This time I had IV drugs about 15 minutes before it was time to push. Which made me a huge a**hole, and I wouldn't listen to them tell me how to push. I pushed for about 25 minutes "my way" and then another 20 when I finally got into the position the nurse asked me to. Again, 2nd degree tear.

You can do it! I was in the same position both times for pushing, which was inclined on the bed with my elbows hooked under my knees, pulling them up to my ears. I hope that makes sense.. They told me it was the only way to get them under my pubic bone,

  • yes DD1 was! I felt the contractions mostly in my back. It took me a while to push..almost 2 hours. I had to have oxygen and they kept having me switch positions [to get her to turn I assume..didn't work though, I eventually did deliver her sunny side up but it was a big effort]. A c-section was never talked about..I don't think it's routine just because the baby is sunny side..it's totally doable just be prepared to push longer.

  • Yes, I did with my first.  My birth story is in my bio.  It was a lot of work but I felt really good about my birth experience.

The midwife later told my mom that if I had gotten an epidural I likely would have needed a c-section, because I would not have been able to move and change positions like I needed to push her out, so I would recommend preparing for a med-free birth.  We took the Bradley classes and med-free was our plan all along, so that worked out great.

I would also look at www.spinningbabies.com for positioning tips, and

https://midwifethinking.com/2010/08/13/in-celebration-of-the-op-baby/  for info on how a labor with a posterior baby might differ from a "textbook" labor.

    Good luck.

  • Absolutely - and similar to PP, my MW told me that if I'd had an epi, I would have ended up with a c-section.  My DS was 9lb70z and while it hurt like HE**, it was worth every effort to have him naturally!  I would suggest getting in the labour/birthing tub if you have one available because that's what got me through my labour med free.

    Good luck!

  • Yep!!  He even came through with one arm in the air like superman!  It was a longer labor of pushing for me but everyone is different.

  • I delivered DS vaginally. He was sunny side up and a compound presentation. He had both fists in front of his eyes. My labor was fast but intense. The epidural helped me as I was tensing up around the baby making it more difficult for him to move down. Because of his hands and poor position the dr used the vacuum extractor to help. I pushed four or five times and he was out. No tearing just a few skid marks.
  • Yes...sort of.  My daughter was OP all the way until the induction, and she turned during labor.  Hand out first, then head.  It's possible that they turn on their own.  I was induced with cervadil, but natural labor took its course and I did not need pitocin.  Fast labor, around three and a half hours, pushed at the end about five times and she was out.  Like others have said, I would plan for a natural birth!  She was 9 pounds, i had no tearing.  You can do it!!!  Be fearless!!  Good luck ;)
  • Thanks ladies! I was starting to get worried. Spinning babies says you have a 50/50 shot at ending in cesarean. I'm too early to tell for sure how he'll be, but I have an anterior placenta, and I know that lends to sunny side up babies.
  • Yes times 5, with large babies. S was the most intense, labour was only 3 hours and she came out with the sac intact, no bumps or bruises at 10lbs 12oz, med free. It can be done, but it does hurt like a SOB.
  • I was induced on my due date, my little guy was sunny-side-up. I did have an epidural - I wasn't dilating, even after they broke my water, and they were talking about a c-section, but I chose to try an epidural first and ended up delivering vaginally, about 9 hours after they broke my water and I started having regular contractions.

I didn't know that having the epidural makes it more likely you will need a c-section!! Good to know for this pregnancy :)

I'm wondering if this baby will be sunny-side-up too. LO has been head down since 20 weeks and is sunny side up at the moment, but I've still got a few months to go...

  • I did.  Labor started about 9:30am, went to the hospital around 3pm.  I planned to use pain meds, but no epi.  By around 8pm I was shaking so bad I couldn't breath and had on an oxygen mask, the pain was intense and took up from my midsection down all the way around. Back labor is no joke. Once I had the epi, I slept on and off until around midnight when they had me start pushing.  It wasn't until DD kept slipping back that they started thinking something was up.  It took almost 2 hours, an episiotomy and a 3rd degree tear to deliver DD, but I did.  The joke now is that since we were Team Green she just wanted to make sure everyone saw she was a girl!

From things I looked up after birth for fear of everything happening again, less than 5% of babies that start labor sunny side up stay that way.  So hopefully your LO changes position before they make their apperance.

  • My DS was born face up, eyes open! My doc was laughing the whole time his head was out he was just laying there looking at her until my next push. I think she even started talking to him at one point. He was born at 37 weeks 5lbs 9oz so I didn't have any trouble pushing him out since he was pretty small. I don't have anything to compare it too but I only pushed for 40 minutes, labored for only 8 hours. I also didn't have an epi, tries twice but could not get it in.

  • Yep. I pushed for 2 hours and had a few abrasions from his positioning. The side effects from his positioning caused really bad back labor and it took him awhile to come down to where I was ready to push. Total labor plus push time was 18 hours.
  • My son was sunny side up. I pushed for 3.5 hours and we came to a point where he just wan't moving so i ended up with an episiotomy and a 3rd degree tear. Of course i didn't want one, but it was that or the CS.

It is VERY possible to deliver this way it just may take longer or require an intervention like an episiotomy. There are stretches and massage techniques that do help turn the baby though! luckily you already know the position the baby is in so you have an opportunity to move your baby! I didn't know that my son was in that position until delivery.

  • I didn't personally, but I do know three people who did it - all were first time birthers.

  • I sure did and he weighed 10lbs 7oz and was 23 inches long (I did not have gestational diabetes, big babies run in the family). The dr stuck with me because I begged not to have a C section and I am very glad I didn't have to have one. They did have to use a vacuum but other than that he was fine. Labor was 12 hours and it took 45 minutes of pushing. He is my first (and only) child - and no I was not afraid to have another one after that delivery. Overall it was not a big deal - the worst part was the back labor but the epidural took care of that. By the way, my really big baby has turned out to be a very average sized guy. Hope that helps!
  • Yes, but it was almost 24 hours of labor and I was super close to c Section. I did have a 4th degree episiotomy. Baby and I are healthy though. I think everyone is different. Try not to stress about it b/c it is out of your control.
