Looking for sling advice

I used to post on here when the AP board was new but have fallen away. I hope nobody minds my asking for advice now!

When my first was little I had a hotsling, which I absolutely loved. Unfortunately when she was about a year and a half it fell off my stroller and got lost :(. When her sister was born I replaced that with a moby, which I liked a lot except my kids tend to gain quickly so by the time she was about 4 months old it was stretching too much to use (I would tie it so tight it would almost hurt and within an hour she would be so loose she wasn't secure). Now I have baby 3 and he's comfy in the moby, but started a full lb larger than his sister and is gaining at the same pace she did, so I know we won't be able to use it very long.

I don't have a lot to spend and don't envision keeping him in a sling/wrap as much as his sisters were in it (when they were little we were living in NYC so the sling was how I took them on the subway and such until they were too big/heavy to go in a carrier; now we're in the 'burbs and drive more frequently so when we're out of the house he'll have to be in the carseat more). So for a less frequent wearer on a budget who loved her hotsling, what would you recommend? I tried a basic sling from target and the size L was still a little too small due to my chest size (pre pregnancy I'm a 34DD, with nursing right now I know I'm a lot bigger).

DHs one request is that it be as easy to use and put on while holding the baby as the hotsling, which he absolutely loved. He likes the moby but finds it too complicated and we can't afford to spend more than maybe $50, preferably less (it seems hotslings got pricier, our first was $40).

Re: Looking for sling advice

  • It sounds like you'd love a ring sling.

This was my first ring sling and I loved it. Its a little more than what you want to spend though..

I'm googling and I'm not seeing any new slings under $50.

You could check out the baby wearing swap on FB, look for one on consignment, or even make your own if you sew! The baby wearing DIY advice and support group on FB would be able to help you with pattern and where to buy the correct rings.

I was looking into making my own ring sling, does anyone know what type of material to use?

First, buy proper rings. This is the most reputable source:https://www.slingrings.com/

  • I agree, a ring sling would probably be great for you.

  • Great, thank you! I'll see what I can find. I do sew fairly well actually, but I don't think it'll happen right now around 3 kids, but I might convince DH to go slightly over $50 or see if I can find a used one.

  • I just bought a ring sling from Sleeping Baby.

    https://www.sleepingbaby.net/basics.php

I had the same problem with a big baby in the Moby, plus a summer baby so it was too hot to use until she was really too big. (And she hated it.)

The sling actually came very quickly and seems like it's well made. It's on my To Do list to figure out how to use it before baby comes.

  • I can not say enough good things about sleeping baby productions. I have three of her slings one for the car, one for the house, and a water one for showers/ water parks. My favorite is a wrap conversion, but I started with a 30 dollar linen and i still love it. My oldest is 2.5 and 26lbs and i wear her in it all of the time. With summer coming up linen is a great fabric that can breathe!
  • I love my Maya Wrap, but mostly use it for nursing.  It was $67 on Amazon, but you could probably find a used one somewhere (craigslist, consignment store, etc).  Good luck!
