My hospital told me that I can go to the local fire station every Thursday and they will check the baby car seat to make sure it is properly installed. I called today to schedule the appointment and they only do it every other month on the third Thursday. The next closest place that will check car seats is an hour away!
In addition to that minor debacle, my hospital has you come in and pre-register starting at 36 weeks to cut down on the paperwork for when you are in actual delivery. I called to schedule that appointment when I hit 36 weeks and the only spot they had available is when I will be 38 weeks along!
Now I know for the next kid that there is nothing quick and convenient about the baby preparation process!
Re: Carseat and other minor annoyances
The car seat issue - huge annoyance with me, too. Our town doesn't inspect them, and the surrounding towns will only do so for their own residents. We had a friend come glance at ours. Do you have any local friends who have had a baby?
Pre-registering - don't stress. If you can't get this done in advance, you will just do it when you are admitted. I also wouldn't take time off from work to register. See if you can go before/after work, weekends, or over the phone. But really, not a biggie. People are admitted to the hospital constantly without having any information on file in advance.
Not to pry, but do you live in West Virginia? If so what hospital are you going to?
At our hospital, we walk into this one office and they just set you up for preregistration. There is no wait and no appointments. I'm glad it's done for me.
I got the impression that my hospital doesn't do pre-registrations. During our birth class, the nurse said they give it to you while they've got you hooked up to the monitors when you first arrive, since there's not much else going on during that time as a general rule.
Pre-registration wasn't even an option 16+ years ago, so I don't even know if it really makes things easier or not.
