advice- smoking co-worker

I have a meeting in 45 minutes and one of the men who will be in attendance smokes a pipe.  Our meeting is in a confined room and the four people who attend this meeting always sit in the same seats.  Pipe smoker always sits next to me.  Since being pg, I'm super sensitive to smells, and I don't want to hurt his feelings, but his odor physically makes me sick.  How do I handle this?

  • Do they know you're pregnant? If so, I'd totally use the "No offense, but I'm super sensitive to smells" card.

  • get there first and sit in a different seat. If they know you're pregnant just tell him that you're sensitive the smell of his pipe.

  • I would just try and get there early and seat jack someone who is far from him. Otherwise if your seat is far from the door just say you're not feeling well) and may need an emergency exit.

But if this is going to be the norm for your whole pregnancy I would pull him aside and say you like him but due to your pregnancy your sense of smell is so heightened that any little thing can make you super nauseous. And ask if he could not smoke his pipe right before he comes to your meetings. I am more of a confront this head on type of person.

  • can you chew gum or eat a mint? maybe the minty smell would over power it

This- or let them know that you're not feeling well and need to sit near fresh air (like closer to the door or crack the window a bit).  If you're not "out" yet, you could also say you're sick and going to move further away at the table so you don't spread your germs....

  • I am "out" so I could address it directly, but he's very sensitive so I'm not sure how he would take it (he's very open about his depression/anxiety issues).  I am considering commandeering a different seat across the room, but envisioning the worst case scenario of him relocating next to me thinking we're switching it up.  It's an 8 seat room for 4 people.  I may have to just take the direct route; maybe it will ease the blow if I tell him that when DH goes out for a cigar with his buddies, I make him take his clothes off in the laundry room, load them into the wash and take a shower before he comes to bed.

  • Can you get there early and take another seat? Not sure if that would help since it is only 4. I would have to say something.

If the only time you're near him is during this meeting, and you're out, I would just say you've been very sensitive to smells and need to sit near the door/window/air vent (whatever is further from him).  If he's very sensitive, I might not want to push his buttons if you can find another way to change seats.

  • Since it's an 8 person table, can you get there late and just sit far away from where ever he's already seated?  If someone says something say "I've had a bit of cough today so I think I should sit down here"
  • yea, I'm not sure it's ok to straight up tell a coworker they stink

  • "the four people who attend this meeting always sit in the same seats"

If they're not actually ASSIGNED, get there early and grab another seat.

ETA: Since you're out maybe you can just say that smoke smells make you sick because you're pregnant. But try to get a different seat first to see if that works.

When it's smoke smell I think it is. A simple hey my ms is really bothered by the smell of smoke, just giving you a heads up that I'll be in a different seat. Now if you come right out and say jeebus, could you smell any worse? That's a different story.

I know what the outcome is since she updated.
