Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sitting up

Does your LO sit on their own yet? If so, how old were they when they started?  Thanks!

Re: Sitting up

  • My DD has been sitting unassisted for about 2 weeks now (so at about 5 months).  She does not last very long, probably a minute before she falls over.

I was wondering the same thing.

  • My DS will be 5 months next week and he is sitting upright unassisted for about 30 seconds before he pitches to the right (always the right, LOL).

He learned pretty quickly that if he leans over his legs so that he's practically folded in half and puts his hands on the floor he can stay up longer.  It's hilarious to watch and doubled over like this he can sit for 2 minutes or longer.

  • DD started sitting on her own about a week ago. But she doesn't fall over. She can sit for about 20 minutes then she just wants to move around.

  • My LO will be 4 months at the end of the week and she started sitting for about 3 minutes at a time last week. But by sitting, I mean hunch over so her hands are helping her balance. She leans forward to put her hands on the ground in between her legs and will sit contently for a few minutes, but then I think she either gets tired or bored and falls over.

  • For the past couple of weeks DS has been pulling himself forward when leaned back.  He tries to tripod.  The way he folds forward just looks painful.  It must not be since he keeps doing it.  He can balance like that for probaly about 30-45 sec.  He's getting better and better and can sit for just a bit before falling over.  The look on his face is priceless when he tips over...Surprise

  • Joey is super close, and he's 3 days less than 5 months. I don't use the Bumbo very often though because most of the time he throws up when he sits in it.

He has the Fisher Price Jumperoo thing, and he loves that, so he sits in that pretty much whenever he's not napping, eating, or wanting to be held. It's good practice for him.

ETA: Joey tends to sit up on his own for 5 seconds before falling over (we don't let him just "fall", we "catch" him).

  • At 5 months DS sat for a minute or so. He became pretty solid around 6 months.

  • My LO has been sitting up since about 2 1/2 months. When she started it was about 2030 second bursts. Now at 3 months 1 week, she can go over a minute. She forgot the whole "baby thing"

  • Out of curiosity, did you all cultivate and encourage the sitting up previous to your LOs doing it (if so, how much time), or did LO start on their own?
