June 2013 Moms

Not what I was expecting kind of appt. (kinda nbr)

I went to the doctor today for my monthly appt. super excited and just waiting to make sure the LO was okay.

I had taken a BRCA test the last visit and figured everything was okay since I hadn't heard anything. Well today before I went to my appt. the doctor called to let me know she needed to speak with me about my BRCA testing results. :/ My mom and dad joined me since I was a little concerned about what this meant. What was supposed to be an exciting "let's see how baby is doing" appointment turned into you have the BRAC 1 mutation and here are your options.

Basically, DH and I have to decide if we want to have another LO after this (God willing). My concern has always been as long as our LO is healthy- I'm happy and will think of having another one later. She explained that I would need to take preventative measures of screenings and possible surgery which could mean no longer having children or IVF. It was a lot to take in and a bit overwhelming.

(On top of that- last appointment she had mentioned having to do biopsy for abnormal cells. :/) Has anyone had experience with BRCA or know anyone who has? I'm curious to hear about it and what they have done after finding this out.

  • I don't have any experience. An you search through previous boards to find someone who does? I'm so sorry, that is definitely not a great appointment.

What shocking news to get, and what a tough decision to have to make. I second the recommendation to search old board posts for others who have had this experience.
    Ditto!!!

  • I can't imagine, but I have a story for you. My mother was basically told that she had ovarian cancer (not necessarily BRCA1, but that was 32 yrs ago) and was told to abort me when she was about this far along! My mother said "no"! I wouldn't have gotten pregnant if God didn't want to go through this journey.  She had some complications and a hysterectomy, but I was a healthy baby! She was done having kids after that, but that doesn't mean you have to be.  I had a cyst take my tubes and one ovary, but I found a way with IVF to be having healthy twins!! So it's depressing, but very survivable and thrivable!! Sending my T&P!!!

  • Thanks everyone. I feel so blessed that LO is healthy and okay. I feel like the LO is even more of a blessing bc if it wasn't for his arriving in June...I might not have learned about this till much later. Your replies definitely helped to keep me positive about it.
