Getting dolled up for hospital?

This might sound crazy, but is anyone getting dolled up for the hospital? I am overdue and have to be induced so know I have to go in on Thurs morning. I was going to get a manicure/pedicure the day before as I know I won't have time for a few weeks. I was also thinking about doing my hair and makeup for pics/video on the way to the hospital. I keep thinking that labor will be several hours and know I probably won't look good after a few hours. Just thought maybe I could get in some decent pics for the scrap book. Thoughts?

Re: Getting dolled up for hospital?

  • I don't think I'll get dolled up but I have been trying to keep my fingers and toes painted and keep on top of grooming. I know once I'm screaming in pain I won't give a rats behind if my legs are hairy but right now I'm concerned about it. I also have been trying to decide how long to wait before getting my brows waxed before go time. Seems so silly but oh well.

  •  I plan to get a mani/pedi soon so they will still look ok during labor...and I plan to try to shower and shave/lotion up my legs while laboring at home if possible...i figured that might help the time pass since i'm going to try to labor at home as long as possible...and that way my legs wont be so hairy and dry and scaly like they are right now lol since so many people will be seeing them.  I plan to dry my hair at least and maybe put a little bit of makeup on just so I don't look too gross in the beginning...but probably won't really "fix" my hair or get "dolled up"...but that is just me lol...I barely even get that fixed up for work.

  • i dont think its crazy. i've been thinking about doing the same the closer i get to my EDD. actually the past few weeks i've been trying to pamper myself more just in case! LOL

  • If it's going to make you feel better and relax, do it. I wish I had the time for a mani/pedi! As for the hospital, I wouldn't go full-face... a little mascara and a ponytail should be fine. I grew up with a mother that wouldn't go to the end of the driveway for the mail without being made-up, so I'm kind of the same way. I say do what makes you feel good - you deserve it, Mama! Good luck!!
  • I don't think you are crazy because you will be taking a lot of pics But after hours of labor how good is your hair and makeup going to look.  I definitely think that going in looking good can only help the way you look in the end.  You are definitely not alone with thinking about this.  I don't see any harm in pampering yourself before.  If you have to have a c-section they will have to ruin your mani for that clip thing that goes on your finger.

  • I had more comments on my pedicure after labor than I would have thought lol. I got comments from the doctor. I also got comments from the nurses as they helped me out of the bathtub lol. So it was worth it. I didn't worry about make up much as my vagina was in pain

  • I am bringing my make-up bag with some nice neutrals and my Urban Decay make-up setting spary. That stuff will hold your make-up like you would not believe. 12 hours and it will still look good. I want to be able to look back and not be horrified by how bad I look. Done the pedi/mani. You're not crazy at all.

  • I got a haircut and mani, pedi before my DD was born, and that was nice.  It was definitely a long while before I managed to make time for that sort of thing again.  With this one I'll do the same.  As far as putting makeup on before the going to the hospital in labor, not a chance!  I plan to shower before I leave, and that's about it.  Labor will ruin any makeup/hair I have anyway, so I'm not worried about it.
  • I just got a manicure and pedicure yesterday with my sister. Hopefully they still look good by the time I deliver. (I'm due Friday.)

  • I plan on getting a mani/pedi once a week until I give birth. I always feel a little better when my nails look good, and I figure I won't have the time to go pamper myself for a while after LO is born.

And my makeup bag is definitely coming with me to the hospital. I want to at least be able to look good after I get cleaned up and all that.

  • I'm got a mani/pedi, eyebrows and lip waxed and a haircut today plus I've been trying to keep up on keeping my legs nice and shaved since I could go any day now... I'll probably put on some makeup if it's late when I go into labor, just maybe not the full thing! If it makes you feel better I say go for it!!

  • I'm due in 7 days. On Friday in plan on going to get my hair cut because who knows when I'll get around to it after LO comes and on Saturday my DH and I are both getting mani and pedi's and 90 min massages, prenatal for me and deep tissue for him! I would live if my little guy comes early but not until after my pamper day! LOL

  • I had a planned c section scheduled for this past Monday and I had planned to give myself a mani/pedi and do some basic grooming in advance. Even planned on fixing my hair and wearing makeup, etc. Well, I ended up having the c section a few days early (with 3 hours of notice and no ability to leave the hospital) after showing some really high blood pressure readings during my final NST. So, no time to do any of the preparations. And as I was waiting to get prepped for surgery, I was fretting about how I didn't have a chance to do my nails or take care of other minor errands (like picking up the drycleaning). But honestly once everything got going, given everything going on plus the pain, excitement, emotions, etc...I honestly didn't give an F when it came down to it. I had even packed a bunch of stuff in my hospital bag like cute clothes, my hair straightener, etc. And throughout my 4 day stay, that stuff never even got touched. I took ONE shower while there and made one half-hearted attempt to put on some makeup. Never got out of my PJ's. Yes, it would have been nice to look better for pics, but DH still managed to get one or two where I didn't look like a complete troll. Looking back, now I laugh at myself for thinking I would have the time/energy/interest to deal with my appearance. I think it would be nice to do if you have the down time, but certainly nothing worth stressing about as it probably won't matter much at the time.

  • I'm being induced as well (on Friday). I've definitely been keeping up on grooming since I know that there is a set date.. As far as "dolled up", I have to be at the hospital at 6am.. I plan on taking my make-up, hair stuff, etc. with me to do once they get everything started, etc.. It will give me something to focus on for a little while, while I'm waiting for everything to start happening.. I'm thinking about going to get a manicure tomorrow but may just paint my nails instead..
  • Last time around I attempted a natural home birth and was in labor for about 26 hours at home before having to transfer to the hospital. Once I got there I had the option of an epi or a csection so I obviously took the epi. I ended up putting on makeup at 10 centimeters (right before pushing) because I had time and wasn't in pain. It was nice once the baby was out and pictures were being taken. If I hadn't put on makeup it wouldn't have been the end of the world and if I had put it on before labor there is no way it would have looked good at the end since labor went for so long.

My thoughts are that if you know when you're going in and it will make you feel better than go for it.

  • Knowing that usually, FTM like me labor for a few hours, I do plan on taking some makeup with me, perhaps maybe even a flat or curling iron. These are things that calm me down, and make me feel like I am in control of something.

As far as grooming, I never stopped taking care of that, and I will definitely get my hair dyed this weekend or the next, but mostly because I know I won't have time for that after baby is here. I also probably will not give a rat's nest. :)

I do plan on taking showers and putting on PJs while at the hospital (after labor)! We'll see how that goes though!

  • I'm due tomorrow, I got a pedi last week (green toes for team green!), a massage yesterday, and my haircut today... not so much to look good in the hospital, but to pamper myself a bit in these uncomfortable last few weeks.
  • Heh, sometimes I wish I wasn't a tomboy. The only thing I will be doing to get ready for the hospital is take a shower, throw on some baggy sweats and a thermal shirt and pull my hair back into a pony tail.

My cousin got dolled up for her 5 pregnancies and all 5 five of them, mascara lined her face. She laughs now at it, but each and every time someone wanted to take a picture she was like "WAIT" and got fixed up as best she can.

  • After the completely heinous pics SIL took of me right after giving birth, I definitely plan to be looking a little more presentable this time.  I need to start in with pedicures soon- my feet could use it since they've been shoved in boots all winter long.

  • With DS1 I did just a ponytail and a little mascara-lets just say there were no pictures taken I looked horrible! with DS2 I did my hair and makeup before going to the hospital and I felt so much better and my pictures turned out great and got lots of compliments on how awesome I looked which boosted my spirits :) if I could afford a mani/pedi I would most def. get one also! I say go for it!

  • I haven't completely given up on grooming my legs and lady bits but I have slowed down. I hope to be able to shower when I go into labour so that I feel as fresh as possible before giving birth. I'm hoping to do some last minute grooming then.

As for makeup and hair...not a chance that I'll be going all out for the birth. I can just see myself being a sweaty mess. So I plan on going in fresh-faced with simple hair and, once LO is born, I hope to swipe on some mascara and pin my hair back a bit. Nothing major.

I think I'm going to go for a pedi in the next week just because I find them so darn relaxing more than anything. I'll probably do an at-home mani later this week and try to keep up on it every few days. I forgot that I wanted to do this so thanks for the reminder! (I haven't done my nails in a while and have been busy the last while...but pretty soon I'm going to have more time on my hands if I don't give birth soon...so I should take the time to pretty up my hands!)
