2nd Trimester

Prenatals vs Flintstones?

Ok, through my entire first trimester I was taking a prental multi-vitamin with DHA and it was making me feel queasy in the mornings with breakfast. I can't take them at night because it makes me feel worse then and i tend to forget in the evenings.

My Sister In-law only took flintstone vitamins while she was pregnant and had no side effects and a very healthy baby...

I am just looking for some advice on if flintsones vitamins are comparable to prenatals, if I take a seperate folic acid pill with them, or if I should just suck it up and continue to take my prenatal.

Suggestions? Experience?

Thanks!

Re: Prenatals vs Flintstones?

  • I currently take Flintstones and did during my first pregnancy. Prenatals made me sick too. Sooooo much better with flintstones!

  • My Doc told me to take Flintstones, 2 a day.  After I hit second trimester, I was able to switch back to prenatals, but I am taking the chewy ones.  Lemon, raspberry, and cherry flavors and they sit just fine.

  • I took Flintstones w/ Iron (2x day) until I found some delicious gummy vitamins and now I take those daily with an iron pill. As long as you're getting the necessary vitamins it doesn't matter so much what form they come in. If prenatals make you feel sick, definitely go with the Flintstones ones.

  • My OB told me to take Flintstones, two a day to have the appropriate amount of folic acid. Now that I'm having twins I supplement with 1mg of folic acid as well.

  • my doctor told me to take 2 flinstone's per day with my first pregnancy since I couldn't keep a regular prenatal down. This time around i'm taking chewy prenatals and they seem to work fine too.

  • I've always taken flinstones as suggested by my doctor. Vitamins are vitamins, and you pee out most of them anyway. Unless all you are eating is donuts for every meal, no one really needs THAT many vitamins, you do get a lot from your food and its processed more efficiently.

  • Every time I took an OTC prenatal I got super sick but when my sent me a prescription prenatal I was fine. If you want to take flinstone vits thats fine but I would check with your doc to see if there is a Rx he/she can send over.
  • When I first got pregnant my doctor told me two flint stones were a totally acceptable substitution to a prenatal.

  • I am also currently taking Flinstone vitamins and also taking a folic acid with vitamin B6/B12. I take my flinstone in the morning, and then my folic acid before bed.  My prenatal vitamins were too strong and making me sick. I spoke to my OB about this. He said as long as I am getting my folic acid and eating healthy, the lower strenght "Flinstone" vitamin should be just fine.

  • 1st pregnancy it took me forever to find a prenatal I liked and then they canged the formula and it contained something I'm allergic to so the doc told me to do 2 Flinstones.  I have done that ever since.

Folic acid is only important very early in pregnancy when baby is in the earliest stages of development; it helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects.

My PNVs were making me sick, so I stopped taking them at about 11w. I tried a Flinstone then, and even that made me sick, so I took nothing from 12 to 16w. At 16w, I started being able to stomach a Flintstone vitamin if I took it after a big breakfast. That's what I've been taking since.

My doctor was totally fine with it. He said I may need more iron later on, but that we'd cross that bridge when we came to it. He was happy that I took the PNV early on but wasn't cool with me suffering just to take a vitamin.

  • Well, prenatals also made me feel very sick and made my stomach hurt very badly. So i take flintstone vitamins i take the gummy multi vitamin one's with all the vitamins you need including folic acid. they are the exact same as prenatals only you have to take two a day instead of just one.

      Hope this helps :)
